Would have been a good b-side...
I wonder what this song would sound like if Frank had added lyrics to it.

try kazaa or something, there's at least one live version of tossed with lyrics... it's pretty damn good too. i hope one day he'll record it as a b-side or something, love it with lyrics!

Oh - thanks, I didn't know that.
By the way, I've always wondered about the place of this song on the album. I mean, it's placed between two original, brilliant songs - Two Spaces and Parry the Wind - which almost eclipse it or make it sound incongruous, a bit too heavy/noisy maybe. Well, it's my opinion anyway.

It's a suitable transition from the bouncy Two Spaces to the heavy Parry The Wind, I think. It's got some bounce and some heave.
As for the song itself, I likes it. I think it'd be interesting to hear Frank do an instrumental in his new sound... what was the last one he did? Mosh? That was a long time ago.

Tossed is like a 4-minute intro to Parry The Wind. I love it.

Instrumental? If you play Tossed backwards, you can make out Frank singing softly about Man's futile search for justice in a world where the law has been tossed aside. Only one man will stand up to protect the innocent victims of this tragedy... Mr. Tossed!
Love the tune, by the way. I don't see this as an introduction at all, more like an epic narrative (all kidding aside). His instrumentals seem to tell just as much of a story as his other songs.

I totally agree with vilainde. ‘Tossed’ precedes ‘Parry the Wind’ to create a segue. I hardly ever listen to one without the other.

I don't agree with the fact that 'Tossed' is an intro to 'Parry the wind'. Personally, when I listen to the orange (not yellow) album, I usually skip 'Parry the wind', which is a little bit too heavy for me, but 'Tossed' and 'Two spaces' are my two favorite songs of the orange album:::

When people say they don't like instrumentals, what does that mean?
You don't like any songs that don't have vocals? Which would mean you probably don't like alot of jazz music. And you must shun classical greats like Mozart and Beethoven.
Or does it just mean you don't like hearing instrumentals on a rock record which primarily has vocal tracks on all the songs? (i.e. - Frank Black's first album).

tossed gives me a big grin when the saxophones come in. theyre synth right? they're so cheesy, its all good stuff. it makes me imagine a portly man walking quite fastly looking for a pie shop or something. you know, stepping to the beat. if it ever had a video....that would be it.

I love Tossed with all my heart. I love all of ORANGE, of course, but Tossed into Parry the Wind is one the greatest things ever put to tape. That whole record is brilliant, every second. The sequencing, the songs, the lyrics, the orange-tinged art work, it's all genius. And Tossed is one of FB's best instrumentals. |

The recording from May 30, 1993 called No Big Deal has him singing Tossed.

"Tossed"
I love the instrument slide into the "verse", the 3 1/2 measures of repeated guitars, the dance feel, the saxophone growl, the out-of-tune single-noted guitars, the unintentional wrong bass note @ 3:08, that little melodic organ sound in the background near the end, and the final loud chord accompanied by the organ.
