Inspired by exciting tales of discussing coffee with Ms Deal, here's my homage to the good stuff.
I love coffee. Not only is it 'legal speed, the American way', but the finest hot beverage money can buy. It comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes, from grande mocha to ristretto, so you can get any amount and any strength you like. Mocha is great for everyone who eats the coffee cremes in a box of Quality Street, and is an ideal combination of two great flavours. Cappucino is a wicked morning drink, latte in the afternoon. Espresso... mmm, espresso. Pure java joy. Machiatto. Like espresso for girls, but still good. Ristretto is coffee for heros, like me.
All coffee is good. I wish I was Italian so I good get good coffee all the time without having to pay through the nose: how much is an espresso in Starbucks? £1.50 or something? crazy.
Anyway, I love coffee, as you can probably tell, so post all your praises and homages to the black stuff here.

Cheeseman, I think the dark side is calling you:
I limit myself to two mugs a day. Any more than this and I can't sleep. I turn into Professor Frink from the Simpsons. We tend to drink Fairtrade coffee (no. 5 strength) at home. It's a vicious market place in the Third World apparently.
If I go more than about 24 hours without a coffee I get a headache. I guess that goes for everyone??

Definitely Fair Trade, good call. I would tend to drink about four cups a day: one when I get up, one mid-morning, one at lunch, one in the afternoon. However, I don't even come close to Frinky, mu-hey, with the vwing and the vwing, mu-hey!

Solution: give me the coffee! It must suck to work at an evil corporation, especially one that exploits such a noble institution. Do Starbucks do Fair Trade coffee? I always make a point of asking for that... As a wise man once said: "don't want your job at Starbucks"

I likes too, but what is a Machiatto and a Ristretto? A latte in the afternoon is excellent. But remember - coffee needs about 4-6 hours to really kick through the blood-barrier of your brain. Thus, if one wants to avoid the physiological effect of coffee - do not drink it after 1800. Take care of your sleep - it is important. |

Mmm, sleep, the perfect accompaniment. Machiatto is espresso with a dash of hot milk, I think. Ristretto is a mega-short espresso which is essentially just the oil from the coffee beans. Really, really good.

Do many people ask for it? I used to work in a crummy little coffee shop, and none even thought of asking for it. Do Starbucks make much effort to promote it?

Shame, really. On a different note, has anyone ever had Christmas Ale? I found it once last year in London - 7.5%. tasty stuff.

Like Cheese and pinkashtray I have first hand knowledge of the dispensing of coffee. In my younger more exciting days I worked as a waiter in a restaurant called JK Frimples in Santa Barbara, CA. This was during summer holidays whilst studying for my degree.
This restaurant was a 24 hour operation and never shut down. I worked the graveyard shift from time to time and people would come in and sit at the coffee bar and drink solidly for my whole shift of 6 to 8 hours. Once you bought your first cup that was it. Free refills. Now that is one great American custom - don't think I've ever come across free refills in the UK. Anyway, some of these customers must have got through 15 cups in a session. Hardly any food, just coffee and a newspaper. Now that can't be healthy. Some of them did shake quite a bit come to think about it!

Hey Bedrock. I lived in Santa Barbara for 3 years. I don't think JK Frimples is there anymore. Was that downtown SB? Great place, Santa Barbara, if you can afford it.
Free refills: it's pretty hard to find a place that serves good coffee and gives free refills, but almost every dinner still does refills. |

You are kidding. How could they terminate Frimples. It was an institution!!
I worked there during the summers of 1987 and 1988. Had a fantastic time. It was about a mile or so up from the beach on State Street from memory. Had a large tree growing out of the centre of the outside courtyard.
Loved SB. Great beach, fun bars, had some rock solid fake id to get into these of course. Enjoyed the 4th July celebrations on the beach. We hoisted a Union Jack flag in 87, left our pitch for 20 mins to get some more beer and came back to find that someone had set light to it....can't think why they would do that. Got up into the hills a few times where you could go swimming in fresh water pools. Called Red Rock I think.
Regarding refills it did seem pretty unusual that they would keep on giving it out once the customer had paid his 75 cents or whatever it cost. Saying that, no one ever stopped me from handing it out for free. Oops!

i think the place in Santa Barbara is now an Acapulco (chain Mexcian restaurant).. but yeah, i love Santa Barbara too.. even though it's very white and yuppie.. it's such a beautiful place. and a nice easy getaway from LA.
i love coffee too.. which i would elaborate on, but i haven't had my morning coffee yet, so i need to go out and get some. i just woke up (we have the rest of the week off! yay)..
i will say, when i worked at a coffee shop i wasn't as smart as pinkashtray. i drank coffee all day long, which i needed to do because we had to be there so fucking early (if you work the morning shift you have to be there at like 5:30) so i was trying to wake up all day.. and then i would never be able to sleep at night from all the coffee, so i'd be that much MORE tired the next day. it was a viscous cycle. i should have stuck with water..
you can give me the free coffee too pinkashtray..

Was Frimples next to the library? If so, floop's right, that is now an Acapulco. Much of SB is rich and fake (particularly on the weekends when LAers invade), which is apparent in the cars people drive and the expanded breast sizes of many of the women walking around there, but there is a pretty large hispanic community on the east side. They put a fun Xmas parade with low riders and hoping cars.
Coffee. How do people prefer making it? French press? Filtered? Coffee machine? I usually do the grind and filter approach, but occassionally the French press is nice. It can leave a texture to the coffee (maybe I grind too much), but I think it has a nice taste. But, it's a pain the ass to clean. |

Santa Barbara is one of the wealthiest cities on the coast.. real estate there is even more outrageous than LA. i don't think it needs any help from LA to maintain it's uppityness.
i would consider your comment a burn, but i'm not a typical "LAer" (i drive a measly Honda Civic) and i agree with you in some respects. i make fun of LA people all the time. it's one of my favorite hobbies actually (making fun of other people makes me feel good about myself too)
you're right about the hispanic population there.. and there are some great Mexican places (i can't remember the name of it, but there's that taco stand one street over from State St. they have all this seafood and stuff. i ALWAYS make it a point to go there when i'm there).. also, what's that one British Pub that's like the only "punk rock" bar there? they have a really good juke box and make strong-ass drinks.. i can't remember what street it's on. |

oh, coffee:
i used to religiously make my own coffee, but now i live close to Peet's coffee, so i just go there every morning. literally. i don't think i've missed a day in a long time. it would be more cost effective to make it myself, but that's my one splurge i guess.. i know if i go there it will be brewed perfectly and will be more fresh than making it from beans i've had in a container for a week. they use freshly roasted beans every day.
if i was making it, i'd use a mulita filter.. and just go one cup at a time. or, just my handy coffee maker (Krupps) with a cone filter #4.
the key to good coffee is freshness though. the fresher the better.

I wasn't trying to take a shot at LA (rereading it does look like a shot at LA, sorry). I worked on State St and Tuesday - Thursday it was quiet and pleasant (particularly before 10am), but late on Thursday it would get more and more crowded as tourist (predominantly from LA) would show up and it would be packed and noisy. |

I like coffee, and like to mix lots of cream and sugar into it, but... one of the most icky feelings I get is to have coffee that contained a great deal of sugar setting on my teeth for long amounts of time. I can almost feel it eating into each tooth when I do that. It's just a paranoia thing. If I get stoned after putting copious amounts of sugar onto my teeth, all I can think about is getting to my toothbrush and ridding my mouth of all that cavity causing crud. |

My dentist gave me shit for that too. He says its not just the sugar thats bad, its the combination of sugar and caffeine that puts it over the top. I mean really, you should here him go off on pepsi and coke... |

The only coffe-type thing I've ever liked is some frozen coffee thing I got from the coffee beanery. I think it's mostly I hate hot drinks, but I just can't stand coffee. Plus it stunts your growth. |

Ahhh..coffee......!!! We try to buy Fair Trade wherever and whenever possible, and I prefer the taste and the process, which is a very appealing ritual, or french-press coffee. Although I hear that making coffee via a vacuum maker results in the best-tasting coffee of all - but it supposedly takes a little longer (10 minutes?) - I love the look of these things - Bodum Santos something electric blah blah blah - I keep eyeing them on amazon.com. If our Braun Flavor Select ever dies (god forbid - it's the best coffeemaker I've ever owned!!), maybe we'll get one. |

I'd be lost with something like that. I just use one of those little thangs that you put on the stove top, I don't even know what thats called. It makes espresso.
Which is your favourite coffee? I've always preferred Caribbean, especially Jamaican Mountain or Costa Rican. Thats tasty stuff.
Biggest pet hate of all time: expresso/espresso. Aaargh, learn to spell Italian.
