Not to pry...I know TheOneContender has been on the ball...but I'm sort of surprised at the lack of tour reviews so far. Frank's played about 5 or 6 shows so far and I've barely heard anything about them. I'm seeing him this Friday, so you can expect an indepth review from me pretty soon.. |

nov. 5, club soda, montreal
it has been 12 years since i have seen frank black/black francis, so one could say that my anticipation was overflowing. after a rather bland opening act, greyhound tragedy, frank came on and opened the night with cactus which immediately was followed by freedom rock. i tried to keep track of the progression of songs, but lost track soon therefter. suffice it to say, there were ample songs from the pixies (monkey, nimrod, wave, crackity), frank's first three solo albums, and plenty of catholics material. the show was loud, very loud, especially 666. i was in the front three rows, only a few foot from the man and the distortion was too much; i could barely hear him singing over the blaze of guitars. i was surprised that the sound was this poor, but hell, it was frank and i thankfully knew the music well enough to make things out. as for frank himself, i can only say that he did not look in the best of spirits. i typically do like to make asumptions about people's state of minds, but as frank did not talk with the crowd at all (other than to introduce the band) and only once smiled when dave p. made a mistake in opening a song, it is arguable that he was not in his usual jovial state. maybe those five nights in Toronto and the night before in ottawa took a toll? to make matters worse, the crowd was obnoxious. any time a pixies song began people went crazy singing as loadly as possible and moshing without respect. call me old, but there used to be an ethic when moshing to not physically injure the people around you and to also avoid those who did not want to join in. oh well. to conclude, regardless of frank's state of mind and the lack of sound quality, it was great to hear him after all these years. i am already looking forward to the next time. ah yes, the lineup (left to right): rich gilbert (in his smart red suit!), scott boutier, frank, david mccaffrey, dave p..
keep the reviews coming! |

Cool d3, thanks for the review. Too bad Frank wasn't in the greatest mood. I think he really hates that obnoxious/moshing stuff, I know he's been known to leave the stage at other shows in the past when that kind of stuff goes on. Anyway, I think you are right, those 5 nights must've been tough on all of them. And Dave P messed up?!?! Ha ha, that's too cute!
Good review, thanks again, Zan

At last years show the wife and I set ourselves up on the left side of the stage. The simple reason I chose that side was almost 9 years before that show we saw the Pixies and stood on the same side but of course it was Joey Santiago we were in front of. Well last year when the band came out and Rich Gilbert set himself up infront of us my wife immediately said to me, "Who is the David Spade look alike, and why aren't we infront of those 2 hotties over there?"
Looks like we'll be setting ourselves up on the right side of the stage this year.

ha, wow, Ten Percenter, you have my number for sure. Hey one time i was in correspondence with The Fall's guitarist Jim, and asked if they were going to ever play Boston. He said "i'd love to, that's where Frank Black is from right?" Turns out he's a huge fan. (although techically Frank's from California I guess) |

Thomas, you make me laugh!! That is a great story. I'm going to be setting myself up right smack in front of Dave P, so we'll probably get to meet each other. Wait, which show are you going to, anyway? Warsaw or the Bowery? (I can't remember, and I'm too tired to look at the other stuff, I'm sure you've mentioned it somewhere) Anyway, I'll be at both of those shows.

I've seen the Fall about six times - they were my main band until the Pixies came along - but the last time was in the mid-90s, I am way out of touch. Then, when I heard that MArk had been arrested in the US for beating up his girlfriend when completely pissed I sort of gave up on them. What is their more recent stuff like? My fave period was when Brix was in the band

I was also a huge Fall fan and used to see them every time they'd come to LA. Just when I was almost ready to forgive MES for sacking Craig Scanlon, he got rid of Stephen Hanley (the John Entwistle of the band in more ways than one). I've heard a couple albums since his departure and I can tell you it just ain't The Fall without Steve. More than ever, the band is just a revolving door of MES's lackeys. Sorry if this is off-topic...
