Greetings, all.
This forum is great, especially the general chat area, but I have felt recently - and hope I'm not the only one - that it is like a black hole. I am on it at home. I am on it at school. If my work permitted it, I'd probably sneak in a post or two during my workday as well. I have been, once or twice, up till about 6 a.m. listening to music on my computer, drinking beer, and yes, posting on the forum, even though there is not much activity during that time. I am the light that is attempting to escape from the black hole's event horizon, and the center, FB.Net, is pulling me down helplessly into it. Does anyone else share this problem? I'd imagine so from the growing number of people with more than 500 posts on here, a few closer to 3000.
Oftentimes, I'll be working on a project, and I think, "oh, well, I'll see what's happening on the FB forum, make one post, and then return to what I'm doing. But then I get on here and read everyone's writings like they're the most profound, interesting pieces of literature that have ever graced my or anyone else's eyes. (Not insulting anyone's writings here, but we do talk about some asinine stuff sometimes, intermittently spaced with little bits of wisdom and profoundness here and there.)
I plan to slack off quite a bit after I reach 1000, but the best laid plans of mice and men...
Anybody else ever feel the pangs of addiction? I'm dimly aware every once in awhile that there is this thing...what was it called again...? Oh yes, this "outside world" I think is the latest term for it. Supposedly it consists of all these odd things like "trees," "other people," and "animals." If anyone has ever heard of or encountered any of these phoenomena, please share. I always like to hear a good whopper every now and again.

I have to disagree. I think your alternate persona Killing Joke post is awfully pertinent and deserves serious debate.

Yeah, it eats time, but for me, that's sort of what I signed on for. The Pixies/FB tribute, the bios (well, bio, but once these CDs are done and I have free time at home again...). I've started to skip topics or skim through, depending how busy I am. But if you need something to kill time, nothin's better...

Seriously though, I think it goes with the territory. If all the posts were cutting edge, thoughtful topics requiring well considered responses then it would cease to be fun. A good balance is the key.
Some forums out there are 100% inane as far as I can make out. I'm a relative newbie but frankblack.net's heart seems to be in the right place.
It all boils down to how you want to spend your leisure time (or ill-gotten work time for that matter). Watching TV, playing sports, walking the dog, etc. Pointless activities for some, essential for others.

I wasn't posting that last post just to point out the inane-ness of some of our threads. I have no problem at all with just bullshitting, my topic thread was just made tongue-in-cheek. I like the forum, so don't anybody think I am complaining about it. It's a good mix to have serious stuff like politics, religion etc but I agree with you, BB, it would be not so much fun to have them all like that.
I figured if there was a topic about how much it costs to mail CD's then I could have a post about how big my addiction to this great website is. (Sorry, floop.)

Maybe Dave and the others could set up another subsection called, I dunno, 'Help is at hand' or something. Anyone who then wanted to help with postage costs, the current price of gold, the best recipe for raspberry jam etc could post there instead.

It gets old after a while. I dunno, maybe it's just me. I still visit daily, but the General Chat, for the past few weeks/months has been filled with way too much filler, back and forth banter, and not enough content. But that's just me.

Well the tour bus is broken, the Catholics are out in the wild trying to hitch a hike, no one knows what the next FB album will be made of, Pixies concerts are announced everyday by everyone save the main players, and orange is yellow. What could there possibly be left to talk about? God, and he doesn't even exist.
The life of message boards and forum is cyclical, Jim, you of all people should know that. As soon as we get solid news from the Man and/or the band (whichever you want), things will kick off again.
Plus the Song of the Day thread isn't that bad, is it?

Ebb and flow..
I absolutely love how this community has turned out. I skip a lot of topics when i log in every day, but i really enjoy the ones i do participate in.
As long as you don't feel like you should read every thread, and can determine which are worth your while, i think just about anyone could get something from here on a regular basis. |

Yes, you should be very proud, Dave. :) The people rock, the moderators rock, the subject of it all rocks, the banter and the heady debate rocks. I love it here. Obviously. I do wish I could have had more of a chance to pick everybody's brains for "Dreams" though.... |

Saying that you'll ease up after your 1000th post reminds me of smokers who say, "Okay, once I finish this pack, I'm quitting."
But I know what you're talking about, though I haven't had too much of a problem with allowing my time to melt away on this particular forum. I had a bad addiction to the Ween forum on Ezboard a few months ago, and they have a chat room there, so it was even more addictive. However, they have a seriously high asshole quotient there, everyone talks shit all the time, so I got tired of all their bullshit and quit posting there altogether and have been coming to this forum since. It's so much more laid back and less beligerent here. I suppose Ween's juvenille sense of humor just draws in a lot of dillholes. |

Glacial, you're so right, this is eating into my time like crazy. However, considering I'm a loser with no life or friends, this is fine!

I'm currently trying to "step down" from my FB.net addiction (it was beginning to affect my entire household, particularly during the pictionary madness this summer), but I'm sure that as soon as I'm downed with the flu/a cold/holiday malaise/some task that I'm trying to avoid I'll get sucked right back into the vortex.
