I can't find this review after using the search facility - it is a four stars (out of four) review by MArk Earnest, dated 7th November 2003:
Notch up another ace for this ex-Pixies frontman and songwriter. Like his excellent recent CDs “Dog in the Sand” and “Devil’s Workshop,” Black and his Catholics combine roots rock, noisy post-punk and even lounge music to great effect.
Purported to be Black’s “divorce” album after a recent relationship breakup, “Tears” is quite melancholy but hardly somber. “My Favorite Kiss,” “Massie Centrale” and “Goodbye Lorraine” deal with loss and regret, but each is set to some of Black’s most melodic, catchy material to date, often with a pronounced traditional-country feel. The highlight is “Horrible Day,” a honky-tonk singalong in which Black’s personified worries pay him a visit with a dark-humor twist (in the third verse, Black informs us that “I’ll take off with my worries/and I’ll even let Death drive.”). As with all the Catholics records, it’s all recorded live to tape, but the sonics are clear and the performances are strong.
Rumors are that the Pixies will get back together, but I wouldn’t cry if they didn’t — not if the prolific Mr. Black keeps putting out great records like “Tears.”
Recommended If You Like: The Rolling Stones circa 1971, Tom Waits’ “Rain Dogs,” the Pixies’ “Bossanova,” Gram Parsons’ later work
