I found this on the Radiohead website, it's a Q and A session with fans. Pretty interesting

QUESTION:
Kid A was a total change of direction for the band. Was everyone committed to this new direction? How did Jonny feel about focussing more on keyboards than guitar?

ANSWER:
I don't remember much time playing keyboards. It was more an obsession with sound, speakers, the whole artifice of recording. I see it like this: a voice into a microphone onto a tape, onto your CD, through your speakers is all as illusory and fake as any synthesizer - it doesn't put Thom in your front room - but one is perceived as 'real' the other, somehow 'unreal'. I'm straying from the point. What was the point ? Well, it's the same with guitars versus samplers. It was just freeing to discard the notion of accoustic sounds being truer. The inverted snobbery amongst some people even extends to keyboards. Mellotrons are 'truer' than Synths, apparently. But remember that hearing a band rehearse will never be the same coming from two speakers. That's fine. Of course, you want your music still to sound beatiful, or to somehow make you react. It's not about just spuring tradition, or rationalizing rubbish because it's 'different'. SO we'll still fill tapes with violins and guitars as much as anything else. Whatever sounds cool. Whatever isn't boring. Whatever is addictive. And ANYWAY There's nothing like a guitar for physically making music - like a drumkit for making rhythms - so I don't get bored playing the thing. I've been telling people, glibly, that there's so little guitar on the new stuff because there are only five Pixies albums, and there are other sounds out there. They hit at their instruments in striving to not be boring - whilst avoiding muso drudgery. Remember the advert The Pixies placed to get Kim Deal (the only applicant):"Band into Husker Du and Peter, Paul and Mary seeks bass player. No Chops."

Ok, so no replies, good for you

but I think what this radioheader says (probably Johnny) is very to the point. It almost implies that Frank was right to stop with the pixies: everything on those 5 albums together is enough (indie)rock for a group/songwriter, after that you should do something else otherwise you will repeat yourself. So Radiohead went very electronic and Frank did also, but more poppy.

I would comment but I really don't understand a word of it.

So I just went back to reading the "gross words" thread instead.

Those Radiohead guys seem nice but they fly over my head. I think.

I always liked "Creep" thought it was a great single. At least I liked it until I saw this horrid solo acoustic version of it by a local singer/songwriter at some show we played, now it hurts when I think about that song.

BLAH, BLAH, BLAH here we go again.

I think some people on this fourm need to get their head out of their Pixies collection. They are the greatest band ever IMO but they are not the ONLY band. Creep is not a Pixies rip off at all. And if you are talking about the quiet/loud, quiet/loud sound that the song has then let me tell you there were bands doing that long before the Pixies.

Did I miss something from Frank since he ended the Pixies??? Very electronic???

Sorry if it seems like I'm picking on you Bill, I'm not, but I think you have been smoking too much of that plant the Dutch are famed for.

i took it as meaning that radiohead went off on this totally new direction, and so did frank post-pixies...
i didn't think he was talking about electronic specifically at all...merely that they changed direction.

first of all:

ok I was overreacting on Creep, it's not a pixies ripp off. But it's nothing special. It's a song that Muse would do and be happy with, but it's nothing really artistic. It's nothing special and they'd wish they were special. I'm very glad Radiohead doesn't do songs like that anymore.

2. What's electronic anyway? Sure Radiohead is way way way more electronic than Frank. But denying that Frank Black used loads of synths and all on FB and TOTY is stupid. Hang on to your ego is based on synths. Ok, there's still guitar on the records, but the intro of Placed named after numbers says it all. I was saying that Radiohead changed their directoin and FB also, not in the same way at all, but both away from typical indierock with quiet/loud sound (whoever invented that). Again what's electronica anyway? and Techno? and Dance? What's the difference between Britpop, Powerpop, Punkpop, Punkrock, Grunge, Indierock? There are some differences but lot's of people (maybe with less knowledge about rockmusic) would just say it's ''Rock''.

3. I never smoked pot and don't judge me for being dutch. It's not the marihuana paradise here at all. But I asume it was just a joke, but I'm very tense when it comes to this subject.

Yeah I was only kidding about the dutch - it's us English who come over and smoke it all (not me though - don't really care for the stuff)

Can't believe you don't like creep though - it's an amazing song IMO. Oh well each to their own - just take a look at the Rolling Stone top 500 album list topic to see proof of that.

radiohead are a real shitty band, trying to sound like a mixture of pink floyd and some "indie"-bands. and all their arty behaviour, and not talking to the press and that stuff, this is just a rip-off of the roger waters - attitude. IMHO.

Sorry, but I can honestly say that along with the Pixies, Radiohead have (and continue to - as great as 'Show Me Your Tears' was, 'Hail To The Thief' was the album I most fell in love with last year) made some of my favourite music ever. At the end of the day, it's the music that gets you, not the image.

And besides - Johnny Greenwood's haircut is much better than Dave Gilmour's.

they talk to the press all the time!!!!!! and I dont think they have any "attitude" or "arty behavior", they just view music as a job (as more musicians should) and don't get caught up in the stupid shit

ooops, seems i hit something here. okay, my radiohead "review" is not quite profound...i just don't like them and they music they do...
this pink-floyd rip-off thing dates back some years ago, i have to confess i didn't listen to their recent stuff.

but probably you all are right, instead of posting some incompetent opinion i should just think to myself "DON'T YA RILE 'EM, GOING ASYLUM" !

cheers
