What do you guys think of this list? Aside from the obvious mistake of Doolittle and Surfer Rosa being so low. It would be cool to try and buy all these albums (with some obvious exceptions: Alanis, ABBA, Madonna, etc.) but I know there are many other albums that should be on this list that aren't. What would you guys add? Take off?

Overall I don't think it's a bad list, it's safe choices for the most part with a few surprises. Just like their list of the 100 best guitarists. I can't really slag on them for either list, it's not my personal choices but it could have been far worse especially the guitarist list just looke at 411mania.com's response guitarist list, now that was horrible.

The top bit is pretty good, although I don't agree with Sgt Peppers at no. 1, I'd rather have Pet SOunds as well. The lower bits are where opinion is more important than the relative quality of an album. For example, a rap fan would rather see BIG than Pixies, I'm sure.

I would prefer to see Blood on the Tracks or Blonde on Blonde at number 1. Or even Pet Sounds, but I think going with the Beatles is once again the safest thing to do, they'll get a lot less hate mail for it.

Wolfman, I so wish I could agree with you, but I haven't heard them.
However, Highway 61 is one of those albums which you think "i knew it was supposed to be good, but not that good". Others to do this are Rubber SOul and Ziggy Stardust.

While it's sad that no FB solo release made the list, I'd say Frank is in some pretty good company there. I'm surprized that TWO Pavement records made it in. Though the list appears to be 70-80% from the 50s, 60s, 70s. You could make a case for Sgt. Pepper's to be #1, or Revolver, or White Album, or... c'mon. The Beatles are the greatest. Seriously. Some odd choices. Ray of Light? Please. Alanis? Was any woman really "empowered" by this? If so, why? And if you're gonna put Nevermind on there, you should put In Utero on there. In my opinion, it's a better record. And what's with putting compilations on there? How can you compare a best-of to a real album? Alright, I'm done complaining.

I've already memorized this list and "In Utero" is actually #439.
I don't understand why they have greatest hits albums either. For instance, they have quite a few Simon and Garfunkel albums on this list, and they also include their Greatest Hits album? Why?
For the Strokes to even make this list is beyond me, but this makes it even worse:

Highway 61 Revisited is a good album, and if you haven't heard it I recommend it, Cheeseman, but I don't think I'd rank it the best Bob Dylan album. That's just me though.

Also, Beatles '65 and the Who's Live at Leeds not being on the list pretty much makes the list invalid.

I think the Beatles get the #1 spot on any of these Top ### just because they're the Beatles. There's no way in hell Sgt. Pepper is better than Pet Sounds, no way. I didn't look much past the top 25 but I would definitely agree with some of the selections. What's Going On is an excellent album that doesn't often make it high enough in these Top Albums charts.

I think people who genuinely love rock music should boycott Rolling Stone. They suck miserably. I don't know about you, but everytime I see a copy on a newsstand somewhere, it's usually got Britney, or Christina, or Justin, or some other test tube baby on the cover that'll make the thing sell. They go where the money is like everyone, and they're really no different to me than teen beat. I really don't take anything they say to heart at all.

This list is laughable. Hey, anyone heard of electronic music? Nevermind, they just forgot 20 years of music. Oh wait, I'm just being cynical, they actually mentioned Kraftwerk and fucking Moby!

Damn it, Vilainde, I've just wasted 10 minutes of life going through the list and counting up. I think I have 85 in my collection although I suffered a moment of double vision and nausea after seeing No Doubt's name in there so I may have miscounted.
One good thing (the only good thing) about this list is that it will galvanise me to buy a few classics such as Bowie that should be in my collection but aren't for some reason.

| Beatles '65 has not been in print for over 20 years because it was one of those hodge podge American releases. It does follow the track listing to the British release Beatles For Sale closely, but about 6 songs from Beatles for Sale are omitted and the latest single at the time (I Feel Fine/She's a Woman) is added, as is I'll Be Back from A Hard Day's Night. So basically if Beatles for Sale made the list, then Beatles '65 made the list. I doubt Beatles for Sale did but I'm not going to look through that list right now. |

| I just went through the whole list. I'm impressed that they included the Minutemen, Massive Attack, Pavement, Pixies, Big Star, Liz Phair (even though I suppose Liz Phair is getting more exposure nowadays) and many others. I own 107 of the 500. |
