rolling stone's opinion on music is only slightly more relevant than "O" magazine. |

Liz Phair has turned into a giant quelude-filled dump IMHO. She specifically asked for Britney Spears' producer for her latest "album", and she couldn't even pull off a decent rendition of a Britney-type song. She's lost her marbles. I will always love "Exile in Guyville" though.
Rolling Stone is a bunch of BS. Trying to analyze their motives behind a "top 500" list is like trying to fathom top 40 radio.
There's a great article on Clear Channel by Jeff Sharlet in Harper's (www.harpers.org) magazine that gives good insight into today's radio/recording/live concert industry, and why a lot of it doesn't make much sense (eg. Frank Black not getting any airtime) - I wish I could link it, but it's not online yet. |

86 out of 500 here, give or take a few that may have got lost in a move or borrowed away. And considering the amount of "hodge-podge" compilations that did make the list, I dont think it would be wrong to include Beatles '65 on it.

Rolling Stone is a steaming pile of horseshit. With this list, they're trying to make people think they had a say in some great albums that are now considered hip. In reality they were too busy covering the Jackson Brown and Fleetwood Mac to give a fuck about X, Iggy, or The Minutemen. They have the luxury of rewriting their own history. Don't forget their "Album of the '80s" was "London Calling" (released 1979). |

There's a shitload of repeating artists. I have done the math, but I'd say there are maybe 400 different bands, lots of duplicates.
I'd be interested in a top 500 with only 1 record per artist, except Frank Black, that would take up the top 20 at least.
I shall freely admit though, I had to bust out Srg. Pepper's, and I know I'll be listening to it a lot.

57, I think. Some dodgy choices, though... my beef is that My Aim Is True is only the third highest Elvis Costello album? What? And 3rd/Sister Lovers by Big Star at 456, below #1 Record? No way...

This list completely discredited itself when they put the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack ahead of Doolittle

No Breeders album, yet Live Through This is on there. That pretty much says it all. |

The top 100 are all classic rock and old stuff. Just make that number one #1. Okay, what's number two #2???

The fact that they put Tom Waits on the list is either good, or really pisses me off.
How come they never have Tom Waits on the cover of Rolling Stone (rhetorical question)? I'm sure they have blurbs about him, but they are too concerned about putting pictures of sluts on the cover, or pictures of Hot Topic "punk" bands. So I guess I'm saying Rolling Stone is obviously about using image to sell their crap-for-brain magazine, because half the bands that make the cover aren't even on this 500 list.
Britney is on the cover every other freaking issue, yet none of her albums made the top 500. Interesting. It goes to show "popular music" is so fake.
Screw Rolling Stone. We should all email them and tell them to put Frank Black on the next cover or we'll [insert threat to Rolling Stone].

Liz Phair never made it big here. Post a picture then I'll see if you're just being an eejit or whether you have a case.
