Every now and then I get this album out and listen to it again for a couple days, trying to figure out where it was the band was coming from, what it was they were doing with the music, and where it was they were going with it, and I have yet to figure out any of it, but the musically just grows more fascinating with each listen. All that fuzz and wah from the guitar, the stomping sound of the bass and drums (which I think are a bit buried in the mix, which is a bit muddy) and Iggy Pop's plain, monotone vocals that have zero effects or studio trickery added to them. And most of the songs basically sound the same. If it weren't for "We Will Fall" and "Ann", it probably would just sound like one fast fuzz and wah party from beginning to end. But what might be faults of a record are not faults in this point, cuz it's the first fuckin' Stooges record, and you don't question a thing like that.

Good point. I have listened to Raw Power and Fun House hundreds of times, but I still cannot "get" the first one. There is just nothing on that album that has grabbed me. The way I like to remember the original lineup is the Fun House sound. The production on that album is so incredibly powerful. And the Bowie mix of Raw Power is like a train wreck that draws you in for all the wrong reasons, but still I love it. So far, the first album has none of the appeal to me. I've never really figured out why.

When people say "oh, the Stooges were such a big influence on me", I reckon they're referring to Funhouse and Raw Power. The first album sounds so evil, wrong and unlike anything else that its far too scary to be listened too just for its rock'n'roll content.

Funhouse is easily my favorite rock record of all time. Hands down. By the time you get halfway through the second side, you realize that it sounds as if they don't want to quit playing. It's just got such an indescribable vibe to it, that can only be blamed on timing, youth, and sheer accident. I wouldn't be able to choose between Raw Power and the first one. I love them both. The ten minute John Cale bullshit can go however, as can the rest of the Velvets and their more "artsy" side. I find it amazing that anyone could even remember who the MC5 were after the Stooges came around. You have to remember that when the first Stooges record came out, the Beatles had not even broken up yet. It's all about the time in which it was around. Fuck all these Stooge influenced bands. Wussies...all of em. The stooges were lunging at college students before they knew what to make of it. Nowadays, all that they accomplished is passe. Not a big deal at all. But, in 1969, this had to scare the shit out of people. I often wonder how people reacted to the super early Sabbath as well (whom Iggy was a huge fan of as it may be noted).....All in all, the first record is still great. If I was given a chance however, I'd snatch Ron's wah-wah pedal away from him and blow it into little tiny shreds that the rest of the band would most likely roll and smoke. I hate those things, and he's particularly annoying with it. Being the huge Stooges fan that I am, I must recommend any host of incredible Stooges non-normal LP stuff that is out there. There is quite a lot of it, video and audio. Bomp records puts out the majority of it, and can easily be found. Most of the material consists of Raw Power era stuff, but you can find it all if you look.

I just bought Raw Power last night, but I absolutely can't get into it because of the awful, awful remaster by Iggy (but I guess the original sucked, too?). The amount of digital clipping is abysmal, and all the sounds are mucked together. I don't mind loud and raw, but this is terrible...

We Will Fall is highly underrated in my opinion. Yes, it sounds out of place in the context of the rest of the Stooges material, but it has more structure and nuance than the VU could manage with a ten-plus minute song.

Digital clipping may not sit right on a Steely Dan or Pink Floyd record, but I think the Raw Power remaster is wonderful.

The Iggy remix was a huge disappointment! As much as I disliked the Bowie version, I'd rather hear it everytime over the remix. On the original, the guitar just LEAPS out of the speakers on the Search & Destroy intro.

Haven't heard it. Actually, I haven't heard any Iggy albums (yet).
How are the Stooges songs on it?

They're not bad, not great either. It's a pretty good album if you don't go in expecting too much.
