Anyone read this (not-so-little) gem - Barney's Version? Mike bought it and lent it to me, and I thought it quite brilliant.

Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if noone outside of Canada has heard of it.

OK, it's been five minutes and I'm maybe a LITTLE impatient today. Has anybody even HEARD of it? Or Mordecai Richeler for that matter?

I was sort of ripping off your "Anyone from Nashville thread" back in the day, which cracked (funny note: I'd originally typed 'crapped' for some reason) me up immensely.
Follp, as for maple syrup, let me check the brand when I get home and I'll get back to you. Do you guys use it on cereal and in tea down there too?

Maybe it's just a Canadian thing? Have you tried it? I can't think of anyone who didn't bring along a mini juice-box style container to school with them most of the time, unless there was no food to spread it on (i.e. an all fruit lunch).
Floop, Old-Fashioned Maple Crest is my pick. Tasty stuff. Goes great on peanut butter toast in lieu of jam.

are you saying that most Canadian children carry containers of maple syrup with them?
Canada fascinates me more every day. |

Nah, Floop, you were supposed to ask in shocked awe/disgust, not earnest enthusiasm. Now how can I lie? I set a trap for yanks (cereal) and brits (tea) alike, but the truth is that I maple syrup isn't really all that much more common here than anywhere. My grandpa does occassionally use it in his coffee, but I've never heard of it in tea, cereal (though I could see it being good and have thought about trying it on some corn flakes), or much else.
I can think of maybe once when I brought maple syrup to school where it wasn't for a project or something.
Sorry to reveal our boringness.

Is the Canadian obsession with maple syrup stronger in the east? I once went to a banquet near Montreal (at a sugar shack with a stereotypical French Canadian guy with a big white beard hosting, his name may even have been Jacque) where a bottle of syrup was served with the dinner meal. Maybe it was just a tourist treatment, but it was great stuff. |

Well, it's made primarily in the east, so possibly a little, but I think that truth be told, we still seem to enjoy our maple syrup a little more than everyone else. Except for the "Maple Leaf Freedom" guys, who want us to 'unshackle' our maples and stop using them for syrup.
OK, I don't think there is an actual coalition or anything organizing such a liberation, but it's only a matter of time...

that's pretty funny c.o.f. you totally had me going on that one. (i'll get you back, i assure you).
now Canada is less fascinating to me.. i liked the idea of Canadian children all carrying around their little personal supply of maple syrup. just in case. i think i'm still going to tell people that, just to get some false rumors going about you guys.
while i have your ear though, where exactly is Canada located again? you guys are somewhere in the North right? |

Nah, that bill didn't pass. Stupid Bloc Quebecois. They wanted a more French sounding laugh.

You should continue spreading it, as I will. Soon, we will have the world believing it. And then it will finally all come together. <tenting fingers>
As for Canada's location, don't worry, it's easy to miss us, all tucked away down there. This is the key element of our entire defensive strategy. No military, just hard to find and place names that couldn't possibly be pronounced by non-Canadians to list as targets.

Exactly. You can just see these two guys in a control room:
Guy 1: We need to take out a target of extreme importance. The future capital of Europe. Target your missles for Saska, Satkasoon, skataoo... ahhh, screw it, just launch it at New York.
Guy 2: I guess I really didn't need to be here as you hogged all the dialogue for yourself. Bastard.

I don't know quite why this thread made me think of this but heregoes. there's quite a few songs I can think of that make reference to liking or not liking sugar in coffee or tea. Am I missing something or does this mean something more or what? |

Ahh, the Guess Who. And Cult of Ray, of course.
The significance? Leading a harsh existence, depriving oneself of pleasure, a fight against the corporate 'sweet'n'low/nutrisweet/???' domination of foreign oil markets, I don't know...
