Today's random song is Western Star.
What do you think of it?
lyrics
Sun she burns mean and big I think I''ll go to Cafe Noir Big screen turns me on I''m gonna be a western star How hard can it be?
I get my freon bingo Inside your cool soft sarong Rolling on the moquette Inside a cul-de-sac kampong How hard can it be?
How hard can it be? When you''re a western star? Shining and free Don''t you know that a star burns best? How hard can it be? And I said now How hard can it be?
She''s so sentimental She''s got my pictures in her head The tool-man is in her dreams I was lifted when she said How hard can it be?
How hard can it be? When you''re a western star? Shining and free Don''t you know that a star burns best? How hard can it be? And I said now How hard can it be?
Now he''s headed skyward Standing up on piles of plywood And all he thinks about is how he Looks like Heroes-period Bowie And his figure blocks the light And he takes away the night And he''s dancing to the new bolero
Yo soy un pistolero I''m not shakin'' in my boots I''m ruler of this moon, boy So if you move I shoots How hard can it be?
How hard can it be? When you''re a western star? Shining and free Don''t you know that a star burns best? How hard can it be? And I said now How hard can it be?
How hard can it be ?
Dancing to the new bolero

I think I will take a crack at it. I'm thinkin maybe Clint Eastwood? Mr. Old West Action...he started out doing Spaghetti Westerns (in Spain) before he hit it big in Hollywood. |

well, it is cool before the rolling begins, so... plus the freon implies a element of coldness. So the rolling warms it up, it was cool, until the rolling

Of course, and the carpet/pussy analogy has been around, well, since carpet I imagine. |

the cul de sac is the uterus and the kampong is populated by an egg (smurfette) and sperms (papa smurf, brainy smurf etc.)
And without any explanation needed: "How hard can it be?" |

I always thought the "Yo soy" line was a play on the popular Beck song. |

"Yo soy un pistolero" means "I am a gunfighter/gunslinger/all-around-bad-mutha-trucka.
The tool man could be a reference to the handyman that mends broken hearts, I dunno...
By the way, this is kinda fun. I like trying to pick-up on Frank's often obscure references. I'm fairly certain that the majority of them originate, one-way or another, from Gargamel's pants.

I wonder if Pistolero has alot of sexual references on it. I mean, in I Love Your Brain, Frank wants to have sex with a brain (maybe). We should do another song off that album next.

Yep, the (moquette) sex verse does explain the musical question "How hard can it be?" but I have a different take on the song in general.
At first, for minimal reasons, I thought of Beck. Just the "yo soy" part, and also "dancing to the new bolero" reminded me of the New Pollution. Then on a fateful night with my mind freshly blown from a spectacular solo performance by Frank I took a quick break in a small alcove of the club on my way to the exit. There was a little platform there with a screen, and audience members took turns standing on it and being 'stars' for as long as the songs they sung along to lasted. I could have kicked myself for leaving as early as I did cause the next day I read in this very forum that Frank ended up hanging out right there for hours after his show! My only consolation was that as I was leaving this space I had a Eureka moment... that Western Star was about Karaoke! well... parts of it at least. maybe.
Anyway I love that song. Always thought those were great lyrics... even though I couldn't make out a bunch of them... |

The Karaoke theory has some merits. Could be. I would love to have the meaning of this song tied down... |

1- cafe noir is a trendy hotel bar in LA frequented by both stars and star wannabes 2- frank black allegedy wrote this at his home in his wife's office while they were still married 3- frank black's ex wife dabbled in the whole modeling/acting thing as far as i can tell, im more concerned with the music than who's swapping body fluids with him
i dont really see any sex in it, but im not really sure what its about anyway...only what i think its about. there's still holes, like the whole plywood/bowie/ruler of moon stuff, no idea.
its also worth mentioning for arguement's sake cafe noir is also a trendy sojo area morrocan/french casual resturant popular with a similar, yet more underground croud.

It's about thinking how cool it would be to be a western movie star.
Seems like a pretty straightforward song to me.
The "piles of plywood" verse is about the actor thinking about how cool he looks ("piles of plywood" = a movie set?). "Yo soy un pistolero... I'm ruler of this moon" are either his lines or his 'in-character' thoughts. |

good idea song oracle.
love the second verse. moquette and cul-de-sac kampong are very cool words. i'm thinking i may try to incorporate moquette into my daily vocabulary. how about "moquette munching" or "cruising for moquette."
not real sure about the meaning of the song. maybe frank's telling us that he wants to be a kick ass country rock star.

I don't think this is a song about sex, that's for sure. I agree with Jason, it's a pretty straightforward song about how cool it would be to be a big western star, with lots of subtexts underneath. The song first makes one think of Eastwood but then once he starts throwing in L.A. and Bowie references, it's more one man's daydream. the man doesnt' have to be FB himself, it could just be a character. Deep down a lot of people want to be famous movie stars, rock stars, etc. This could just be a clever play on that, as he himself is somewhat of a famous rock guy. Then again ... only one guy out there really knows ... and hey, we know you read these buddy!!! =) |
