I finally upgraded to the CD version of "Come on Pilgrim" and while reading the liner notes, I realized that I used to live across the hall from where it was recorded. Fort Apache South was a sister studio to the main Fort Apache and it's actually in Dorchester, but close to Roxbury. This studio is in the building I was evacuated from because the landlord was storing propane and chemicals indoors (as well as not having a residential zoning). The studio is now called "Magpie Sound" and aside from it's history and a decent sounding room, it's become a pretty sucky studio. The owner's a nice guy, but he has crap for gear. Anyhow, I thought you might like to look at some pictures of the room. http://magpiesound.com/studio.htm He changed the paint and some of the sound proofing, but everything else is supposedly as it was.
I love living in Boston and being a Pixies fan. I'm recording at Q Division next week (where Surfer Rosa was recorded) and one of my teachers at Berklee used to own Downtown Recorders where Doolittle was made (it no longer exists).

Sucky studio?
Maybe you should come back...If I remember correctly, your sullen self came to see the place like a year and a half ago ...just after I opened the joint... a lot has changed and I have dozens of very happy clients....wait...maybe you shouldn't come back...no definitely not.
Crap gear?
Maybe because you don't see brands like Studer, Cranesong, Empirical Labs and Drawmer at the local Banjo Center(r) you may think they are crap but they ain't...
At least be an accurate prick...prick.

Now what were the chances of that happening???
Actually it looks as though someone has grassed on you Athiest 'cos Magpiesound has never posted before, which seems too much of a coincidence to me. Seems he registered just to put you to rights. Now all you need to find out is who grassed you up. Check people's profiles to see where they are from. |

it's quite an old post too (the original), so he'd have to have done a search for it or been sent a link...

I was sent a link by someone searching on my studio...nice.
My apologies for being bitchy on your board. However, I hope you all understand my annoyance. I have put every bit energy I have into making a really killer studio (regardless of it's history) for more than a year and it is really taking off... we are booked solid and doing damn fine work... nothing but happy clients...
Then I get this link... atheist4cathlolics is a bitter jerk.

Julian, don't be so fucking defensive. Obviously things aren't going THAT great or you wouldn't feel the need to defend yourself on a Frank Black forum. I think I'm the only one here who lives near Boston and is in the market for a studio like yours; so you're preaching to the deaf. Secondly, why am I a prick? Because I gave my honest opinion of your studio or because I offered my opinion without being asked? Regardless of what names might be on your gear, I heard tracks that you recorded there and was unimpressed. That's my opinion and the opinion of Will, the other engineer who was with me when I visited your studio. Shit, I lived across the fucking hall from you and was at the time looking for a studio to record overdubs in and I didn't opt to use your studio. Why? Because you were asking way too much per hour for what your studio was worth. Instead I drove an hour away to Acton to work in a studio with a better room and better gear and at a third of the price. Perhaps I'm unfairly judging your small studio against the big boys in town like Q Division and I apologize if I've lost any business for you because someone saw my "review". I obviously never expected my post to show up in a yahoo search. The classy thing to do would've been to simply argue your case, but so far you've been unsuccessful in changing my opinion about your studio. Now when someone searches for your studio and follows the link to this post they're not only going to read my bad review of your studio, but they're also going to read your pathetic, childish retorts where you call me a "prick" and a "bitter jerk" (that one's really funny) instead of listing specific reasons as to why your studio doesn't suck.

If this was the studio where 'Come On Pilgrim' was recorded, I'd record there for the vibe, not the equipment.

Defensive? Yes, definitely.
You slammed my studio in a public forum. You did so in an uninformed, thoughtless manner. Yes you came over to my place a year and a half ago after I had just moved in. If I were to base my opinion of my place on that tiny sliver in time, I would agree with your assessment but, with tact that you obviously don’t posses, I would never used words like “sucky” and “crap”. If you could have mustered and organized your thoughts beyond the chaotic joy you felt in having lived so close to a room where an album you love was recorded (Oooooooo) you might have noticed (as you were stealing my pictures) that my partner and I have taken a simple room and made it into, simply, a great studio. Through countless hours of sleep-deprived, sweat-soaked, bleeding knuckle, coffee fueled work we have made something that sounds great, is cozy and very popular place to record.
So yes, defending my place was my prime motivation for posting here. There is no bad press on Magpie (save this post…thank you very much) because my partners and I have always put in every bit of work we can to make sure everything we do is absolutely the very best it can be.
I am curious what you have heard of our work that you were so unimpressed by…. I noticed no details were forthcoming. You know, there is stuff recorded at Abbey Road that I am unimpressed by.
Enough of this….to any of the Frank Black faithful being guiltily entertained by this little spat I ask you to go to my site and read the testimonials section… they are over the top but they are what actual clients think about our place …not the thoughtless, ignorant dis of a maybe-someday-audio engineer with a big clumsy mouth.
By the way… and aside…..finding this site has been fun (minus the idiot sparring) you are a great group and a riot.
Best,

Thoughtless, perhaps. If I were addressing an audience that I thought in any way would be in the market for your studio I would have chosen to be more diplomatic. Uninformed? Nope. Are you still running a PC using Sonar through an Alesis console? That seems like a pretty unprofessional set-up to me. I don't know of any pro studios who don't at least offer a Macintosh with Logic or Pro Tools. I applaud your new purchases, particularly the 30K's, and the Distressors. You had half the gear and only a third of the mics when I visited before. If you had had those back then I would've said "okay gear" instead of "crap". So why are you still name calling instead of pointing out these improvements to me and the rest of the forum?

So in other words, you agree with my initial assessment of your studio, you just wish I had voiced my opinion in another way. I agree with that as I said earlier, but I think everyone here would agree that you have no right to criticize my tact based on your totally tact-less posts thus far. At the very least I have only criticized your studio and your posts and have not taken cheap shots at you personally. In fact, I even said you were a nice guy in my original post. You call me uninformed and yet you instantly assume that I am "bitter" and suggest that I don't know what I'm talking about without knowing anything about me.

Well, seeing how I posted this nearly a year and a half after moving I wouldn't say it was with "chaotic joy" that I wrote it. And I'm not stealing your picture, the picture in this post is merely HTML that is referencing the picture on your site. I just thought that the forum would be interested in seeing the room. Your studio has gotten a lot of publicity out of this. I even posted a link to your site! Anyone with a shard of intelligence who visited your site would be able to form their own opinion about your gear and the quality of your studio based on what they saw there.

I don't mean to dismiss all the hard work you've done. I know what it's like because I've done it too. I struggled for years in near poverty before I had built a successful roster of clients and could make a good living as an audio engineer. That said, I am always open and interested in people's criticism of my work. How am I supposed to get better if I only get compliments? So why are you spending all your energy insulting me instead of trying to find out why I (a potential client) feel the way I do and what you could be doing (or what you may have already done) to change my opinion. If someone criticizes my work I take them seriously and try to find ways to improve.
quote:
I am curious what you have heard of our work that you were so unimpressed by…. I noticed no details were forthcoming. You know, there is stuff recorded at Abbey Road that I am unimpressed by.
And there it is... Abbey Road has all the gear you could ever want, and yet bad work comes out of there sometimes. What does that tell you? That the gear is secondary to the people running the gear. So why not make that point and tell us where we can hear some stuff you've recorded? The drum tracks you played for Will and I sounded like they were recorded with low quality microphones, especially the overheads. Now that your mic collection has expanded and includes a pair of Earthworks 30K's which make great overheads, I'm sure the tracks are much better.

Well, you started this paragraph out with a modicum of business savvy, but then returned to your "uninformed" personal attacks on me. I feel like the gloves are off after that last sentence so I'm going to get more personal. You charge $35 an hour for your studio, right? Well I make $50 - $70 an hour as an audio engineer and I get to pick and choose the projects I want to work on. I work primarily out of my apartment and am usually wearing my pajamas. I can afford to only work about 10 hours a week which frees me up to write and perform my own music. Perhaps you have a different qualification of what it takes to be a legitimate audio engineer, but for me, I'm as happy as a mother-fucking clam being where I am right now.

You're right (aside from calling me an idiot). This site is great. So why insult the intelligence of the people on this forum by continuing to call me names and not engaging in an intelligent dialog with me?

Jeesh...man, *read* our gear list...the gear you mentioned has looong since been replaced. So, yes, "uniformed" is accurate.
You started this ridiculousness by insulting my studio without bothering to inform yourself as to what we do and what we offer. Kindly do so.
happy day
so are the pixies getting back together or not ;)
I am happy for all your success as an engineer, really.

In case the forum was wondering (though you're probably bored of this by now), we've called a private truce. All I can say is that I've learned a valuable lesson about the internet...

Well, maybe you and I can get into a fight. What are some things you really like and I'll tell you they suck.

I saw A4C's post up above, and I thought (in a Simpsons' Comic Book Guy voice), "Longest post ever!"
