How many of you have had any online friends become real life friends? Let's hear the dirt kiddies. I, for one, met someone over two years ago, had an "offline" encounter with her, got over it, and now she's easily my closest friend on the planet even though she lives on the other side of the country. Who would have thunk it?

I am one of a bunch of women who met in iVillage, and then we were sort of kickd off/forced to leave, (cos we were all too chummy and intimidated newbies, we didn't mean to, they're just a bit wimpy at iVillage) so we moved to a forum at Delphi. I haven't gone to any of the weekenders we've organized, but we are pretty tight: these women provided me with much maternity clothes, we've helped each other out through fires and cancer, etc. Its really weird -- I've never met any of these women face to face, but they are among my tightest grrlfriends.

i've developed friendships online, but never really started one - ie, i've met people at shows/bars, etc and exchanged email addresses and became better friends through there, but never just a random person. when i was in high school that was the cool thing to do. meet people from a few towns over and then hook up someplace. one girl tried to "hook up" with me online, but eventually didn't because i wasn't jewish. she turned out to be very attractive, but a HUGE slut, so i'm glad nothing came of it. plus, it would've just been dirty. and i was 14. sheesh

The absolute best part of this forum has been my fabulous friendship with at least 5 lovely people. Three of whom I talk to at length everyday and 4 of whom I been fabulously lucky enough to have met in person.

Love yous guys!

I find it interesting somewhat. It seems to me that because the nervousness and pretention of being face to face leaves you with only the person's real personality, if he or she is willing to talk that is. I met, by complete chance, my favorite person I now know. No lie.

There's alot of people here I would like to meet in real life, but there being vast distances between our locations I doubt it'll ever come about, except maybe if we go to the same FB show...even then, (I do plan to go to the next FB show that comes even remotely close to Oak Ridge) I don't know exactly how I'd spot out anyone from the forum...

Another thing is that, on this forum, we probably are not all exactly like we are in real life, although some of us are. I know I'm not! I'm somewhat more shy and reserved. It'd be disappointing to meet someone in person at a FB show and find out that even though you had a great correspondence with them online you have nothing to say to them in person. Sometimes you almost forget you are talking to real people. I guess that's a side-effect of posting too much.

The only person that lives remotely near me is the swimmer, so if we ever go to the same FB show and I see someone who looks like that guy in the "Phelans Phake Phrank Phriday" thread I'll definitely know it's him...

I have a few stories:

1. My story for the 500th time, condensed. I first met Jeremy of The Bennies online through the AbstractPlain back in 1999 or 2000. I came out to meet them when they opened for FB in 2000 and ended up moving to PA to be in their band in 2001.

2. I met my first real girlfriend online in an IRC channel for Michigan teens. She lived 5 minutes away.

3. I also met most of the other regulars in the channel, who all happened to live around eachother. They were very cool because they were probably my first encounter with computer nerds who were like me.

4. I had a really good friend online who I had been planning to meet for a long time but that never materialized. Me and her talked on the phone a few times, and we once spent...no lie...9 hours on the phone together. That's freaking weird.

5. I met a couple of people off the AP (whom I mentioned in a previous post) at FB shows...a couple of them I met more than once.

I think that's it...I also talked to Scott Stickler of the AP on the phone a couple of times, he's a very cool guy.
