FRANK BLACK AND THE CATHOLICS
SHOW ME YOUR TEARS
Spinart Records
For some ten years now, Frank Black has been shedding his past as front man for the late, great Pixies and exchanging it for a singer-songwriter solo persona, seemingly modeled after such idols as Neil Young and Tom Waits. Backed by The Catholics, Black still tells oddball stories and enjoys hamming it up, but his solo work has grown increasingly serious. Show Me your Tears is more of the same - but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Recorded live to two-track in a "mobile recording unit" somewhere in Los Angeles, Show Me Your Tears features a leaner, more focused sound. The Catholics are a tight unit and they effortlessly weave country-tinged instrumentation and punk rock into Black's largely power-pop influenced sound. Frequent guest stars Joey Santiago (of the Pixies) and keyboard player Eric Drew Feldman (ex - Pere Ubu) enliven the proceedings. Primarily produced by bassist Nick Vincent, Show Me also features some tracks produced by singer-songwriter Stan Ridgway. However, Black is still the ringmaster here, and Show Me may be his best set yet.
