I couldn't find it anywhere on the forum or the tabs page. We're gonna cover Manta Ray with the band I'm in and I'm not sure about the lyrics. Looks like there are a lot of different versions. Anyone knows?

PS : si je comprends bien, ça raconte l'histoire d'un gamin qui a vu un ovni et à qui les flics disent : "Meuuu non, c'était une raie manta !" |

These lyrics I will dispute. I'm not saying I know the answer for sure, but I think what I hear makes more sense. Most of us would agree the song is about a vision of a UFO that is in the shape of a Manta Ray. I think there are quotes from Charles where he says his mother tells him she was holding him as 3 month old when they were exposed to what she thinks might have been a UFO. The below lyrics make more sense if he is talking about that night.

I'd swear BF says "blue" and "tonight"... but I wouldn't swear I'm right. |

After listening closely to the two "studio" versions and two live versions I have, it would seem you are both correct (partially).
"A fish from ocean blue" "Above my head that night"
Also fits in with the song's content.
regards, spoon
PS. I used to think it was "At least they say" until I got the various live versions where you can really hear the plosive "P" sound. Doesnt change the meaning much though. |

Si bien sûr, Dancing est la suite de Manta Ray. "Your head can go real screw / with saucers chasing you" = "Tu peux vraiment devenir cinglé / quand les soucoupes te poursuivent"...

Frank doesn't seem to like the song, regarding to the liner notes on B-sides album Very strange, cause it's one of my favourite

Either is better than "A fish from Mon Shamoo, Above my head tonight".
I only suggest mine cause it sounds like a real sentance, but either works better than Shamoo.

-- Alternative Press citing Black Francis
quote: "That's my code word for UFO. It's about a UFO incident in 1965. I have it described to me in great detail by people who were there. My mother was there. This was in Nebraska. My cousin has a couple of UFO experiences, too. I've only had one and I don't even remember it; it's sort of undramatic. There were legit people who don't even follow that stuff. It's like, 'What, mom? Say that again? There was a flying saucer floating above the house for half an hour and everyone just stood there and watched it?' 'Yeah, I don't know. There was just kind of a floating saucer.' Charles imitates in a maternal falsetto. 'I was just like, 'What?' It was just hovering. Then the state police came and chase it, but they couldn't catch up with it. A big red fucking saucer, a glowing, fucking, flying saucer. My mother's weird, but she's not that weird. She's got no reason to make this stuff up. She's harmless, do you know what I mean? I have a couple of memories as a young boy seeing things in the sky that did not look like airplanes. Once a rocketship, but I thought it was a blimp because we lived right near the Goodyear Blimp in L.A. It was right down the road and took off everyday. It would have messages and stuff. So I was watching the lights of the blimp so I sort of was following in the car, then it started going in the other direction, really fast. It was a blimp, then it wasn't a blimp. Of course an airplane does not look like that. The only thing that moves like it is a helicopter and it just did not look like a helicopter. It was a blimp then it was going really fast and going in the other direction. Blimps make real wide turns."

Oh my dear Lordy I love this song too! It always reminds me of a time way back when I was a boy of 6 (1977) and it was eveningtime, so it was near dark. I sat in my bedroom playing with a toy spacecraft from that old show Space: 1999, and I looked out my window to see the entire sky was filled with colored lights. Of course, I freaked cause I was playing with a sci-fi ship...and outside my window was what appeared to be the real McCoy (not Dr. McCoy from Star Trek, but a star cruiser). I ran as fast as I could, my stomach in a knot and brain in a 6 year old tizzy, towards the front door. When I emerged onto the front step, I raised my eyes in horror to see........

Well, I was dissapointed...and yet relieved. No otherworldly species had come to take me away as I feared/hoped. Just some airborn advertising a bit closer to the ground than usual. Damn zeppelin.

Anyone noticed that on the tribute CD, the band that covers Manta Ray says, "At least they say, my mother too" It bugs the hell out of me. |

Unfortunately they cannot just refer to the official music tablature. They are just guessing like us. Like I said previously, I thought that's how the song went until I got a few of the live versions to listen to.
Funny the first vesion I had of that song was a bootleg of the Peel Sessions (mediocre quality) and I actually thought the opening instrument was a palm-blunted guitar instead of Kim's bass (which she is probably palm-blunting too...on that version at least).
Such a simple song to cause so much mystery.
Regards, spoon
