I have been listening to a lot of Sea Change lately...
Poor beck must have been through some serious shit...
I heard it was the breaking up of his long term relationship..
but if you give it a listen to from beginning to end, his sad tone will more than make you want to slit your wrists.

I've listened to it about once, I really need to listen again. It is a really great album. I believe they were together for 9 years or so when she broke up with him.

I saw him recently on his Sea Change tour - good show!

Possibly Elliott Smith.

I have Sea Change too. It is sooo sad. I haven't quite found the mood in which I say, "Hey, let's listen to Sea Change again!" Maybe a long walk on a grey day.

i've been in that mood lately.. going through a nice break-up always aids the wanting-to-listen-to-depressing-break-up-music mood.

on Beck, i don't think it's exactly sad, but i think MUTATIONS is a totally underrated album. you never really hear about it too much. but i love it. also hits the spot on a grey day (not that we have many of those here)

I agree floop. Mutations is a fantastic album. I like Sea Change, but don't understand why it got better reviews than Mutations.

yeah, i really like "we live again" "dead melodies" and "static"..

static is the perfect staying-in-because-it's-rainy-and-depressing song..

I haven't listened to enough Beck mostly Odelay but I always seem to go back to Mellow Gold which I swear made me cry once,
Way too much to drink (alright paralytically so), crash out on the couch, my bro puts on Mellow Gold and thought it would be funny to repeat that last song and leave. That song (if you can call it a song) over and over and over is enough to make anyone cry if you can't turn it off;)

That one Truck Drivin Neighbors, I heard that first part was really his neighbours fighting.

She's a whimsical tragical beauty....

that little snippet is also on Golden Feelings.. his hard to find, cassette only release from way back when.

i always assumed that was real, and that he recorded it.

i also bet that "tasergun" is a true song about a neighbor, but i could be wrong..

TASERGUN

I got a room down in hollywood
The rent was cheap,
The street was cool
But there was an old man
Who lived right next to me
He was so wretched
He ate up everything
The day I moved in
I got weird feelings
I played my guitar
He hit the ceiling
He ran out into the hall and he yelled
"watch out, son, I’ve got a taser gun!
Watch out, son, I’ve got a taser gun!"
He’s on the loose
He’s got the juice
Like a mad dog with no teeth

He left me notes
Said all kinds of things
"you little creepy slob,
Why don’t you get a job?
Why don’t you cut your hair?
Why don’t you get out of here?
Why don’t you move away?
Why don’t you just get lost? "
He spent his days
Down in adult book stores
Bringing home all kinda weirdos
And blasting his tv back at me
So one day I get pissed
We got into a fight
I kicked him in the nuts
He yelled with all his might
"watch out, son, I’ve got a taser gun!
Watch out, son, I’ve got a taser gun!"
You son of a bitch
I think it’s startin to itch
He’s got the taser gun
(spoken: mr. handjob)

And didn't the fight end with one of the guys (I assume the one getting worked over) getting his arm chopped off with an ax? I don't where I heard that.
