You'll never forgive me for that, will you.
As long as were are not at another concert I'll be glad to accept anything you throw at me.
People please don't kill me. I know in some circles refusing a drink is not a good thing, but I haven't had a drink at a show since I saw Metallica in Biloxi, MS. in 1988. It was general admission on the arena floor and the first thing they are selling as you head for the stage is BEER. We all buy a cup or two and drink away as we wait for the show............As time passes I must have gone to the restroom 2 or 3 times before the show was over. There for I don't drink before or during the show.
Back on topic.
Tony, I accept.

More importantly the Nazi ass. I'm sure you'll find a few Germans on the board who are good people, the rest are trying hard.

Nazi's ass, Thomas?
11-11 is the end of the Great War, right? World War One? The were no nazi's involved in that one...
Or isn't veteran's day (I'm not familiar with it, sounds American to me) for all the veteran's ever?
Because I'm quit positive today is the memorial day of the first world war.
Also: The start of dutch/catholic carnaval (I'm not attending) And some sort of haloween without the scary things but with the candy it's called St.Maarten over here, so it's probably catholic also

The holiday that commemmorated the ending of the Great War, World War I, (supposedly the armistice was signed at 11:00 on the day, too) was changed after World War II to be a holiday to celebrate all veterans of all wars. People thought that World War I was the biggest war imaginable, how tragically wrong they were.
BTW, did you know there's only about 40 something WWI vets still alive today? |

Best wishes to all on this holiday...
I want to buy beers for you guys, before, during or after the show, whenever you would like it.
My friend, a young man around 22, is blind in his eye. He and his buddy had a grenade launcher backfire on them. They both lived but my buddy's friend nearly died and Peter is blind in his right eye. He's come back to the hills and is planning on building guitars in a cabin in the woods. He said 100's of Iraqi citizens knew him by name from his patrols. He spoke very positively of his experience there, and that the citizens were really curious and friendly and... I'm sure I'm not the only one who has been personally effected by this war and other wars... there are plenty of wars out there

Not just the USA you know. Thanks to all of the people around the world who sacrificed their lives to give Hitler / Mussolini / Hirohito a good pasting. Plus the guys who did it before in WW1. They all deserve the worlds respect!

Although it can be said that Germany was definitely responsible for WWII, I have been thinking it's not so cut and dry for WWI...In invading France, Germany was instituting a plan reacting to the Russians, who were going to set up troops along the eastern fronts of Germany and Austria-Hungary. Maybe Germany was a little bit overzealous in their defensive parameters, but any country would've done essentially the same thing at the time...everyone was feeling pretty paranoid. After Germany lost, maybe the punishments we inflicted on them wouldn't have made them so resentful of the Allies' victory, thus making WWII a little less likely? Or it could've simply been an inevitable conflict that nothing could've been done to prevent. Anyone's opinions on this?

I didn't even know it was Vets Day until I got to work. No wonder I didn't get any mail. Is anyone else fascinated with WWII like I am? I think it's partly because of my WWII game playing, but back in grade school I had a somewhat unhealthy (and now that I look back at it, somewhat creepy) interest in Hitler.

Dictators are pretty interesting. Hitler is credited with being an evil guy, which is true, but so many more people died under Joseph Stalin's government...
I don't know much about Mussolini.
I did start reading "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" which contained alot about Hitler. Apparently he started out as an artist in Vienna (which I'm sure most of you guys are aware of.) I wonder if he had made it as an artist, if he still would've turned to politics? Then we may never have had an Adolf Hitler, but I'm sure it would've been someone else...
I'd say that the generals under Hitler are just as evil if not moreso than Adolf himself...like Goebbels, and Goering. All the fucked-up medical atrocities they performed on the Jews...

We call it Remembrance Day in Canada, though I'm not sure if I would call it 'happy'. ;) A thank-you, though, to the people who fought so that we wouldn't have to.

To Glacial,
being a first year History student, this is what I think:
as for joseph stalin: -he is responsible for more dead people then Hitler -the russians were (with USA and Canada of course) responsible for ending WWII if find that there huge losses in that war are often overshadowed and that there aren't credited for what they did. I know that we should not praise Stalin, and that he probably joined the USA side for the wrong reasons, but over here people were kissing the American and Canadian butts (and so they should), there were much much babies born in Holland the next year who were from a Canadian or American soldier. I think it's sad nobody ever thanked the Russians or that there isn't a memorial day for the Russian soldiers who died for our freedom.
WWI and WWII can be seen as one big war. True, there was no fighting in the 20's and 30's, but WWII is just a reaction on WWI. WWI did not happen due one crounty, not Germany alone anyway. Crazy as it seems, people all over Europe were really into war. I saw a BBC documentary, and a very very old man told about the new years eve of 1900, he said to his brother that night:I'm hoping there will be a war soon. There were 50000 war poems written every day in Germany just before the war started. One of the reasons that WWI started was that lots of countries wanted more influence in the Balkan countries, I don't have my textbook with me, I should look it up, but I guess that was one of the main reasons. Besides that the huge technical revolution, like airplanes and tanks, people wanted to try them, there was some sort of cold war going on (countries thought that if they build much war instruments it would prevent an actual war rom happening), with the exeption that this war collapsed into a very hot one. After that the act of Versailles was so crazy, Germany was really pushed into the NAZI hands.
hope I do not sound too geeky or flashy, etc.

Perhaps Russia/USA/Canada helped end the war, but the British deserve an immense amount of praise for holding the line. |

Probably just not meant to reveal any political conventions that might otherwise end up in a broiling hotbed of debate, would be my guess. (As has happened before...moreso with current events though, like US in Iraq, etc...)

Very true, very true. Churchill must have been a hell of a leader to hold the country together and keep resisting in the face of what the nazis were throwing at them.

hitler suffered of complete lack of talent.and he was pretty frustrated about it too.i 've seen some of his paintings and they suck bigtime(most professional art critics think the same)

My grandfather was in WWII, but I don't think he was at the front lines of battle, and he's rarely told any stories.

It seems that many people who fought in that war don't like to talk about it. I have heard others comment on this, and my step-grandfather and my mother's father were in the war but never speak of it.

I can't imagine wanting to dredge up those old memories. Even if it helps us to remember just how awful it must have been...
My grandpa also fought in the Greek civil war but thankfully survived to liberate Greece. But I don't know Greek well enough to converse with him. :(
