I'm not a fan of the 70s rock but... I've just rediscovered an old Deep Purple record - a best of I bought 15 years ago or so - and I'm really, simply, completely amazed. Everybody knows "Smoke on the Water" or "Child in Time", but these guys actually wrote much better songs. I think "Highway Star" is the best of them all - the solos especially are fantastic.
Am I the only one here to love that song ?

"Lazy" and "Space Truckin" both from the Machine Head LP, are very, very good. |

The whole of the Made In Japan is just the ultimate of rock excess. For example, one song per side! ten minute drum solos! In fact, step forward Godspeed you Black Emperor...

As far as verse and chorus go, Highway Star is a rockin' tune, but it's the solos that take it to the next level and then some. |

You are so right.

The whole Deep Purple In Rock album is pretty good (though I don't need to hear "Child in Time" again). A bit rawer sounding than the later ones. That organ is thick. Rock! |
