Hey everyone. I just thought some of you might like to know that there will be a total lunar eclipse tonight; I know there are a few amateur astronomers on these boards. I'll be out there with my telescope and chinsy digital camera.

You can find information on what to look and a minute by minute schedule of the effects here: http://msnbc.com/news/978686.asp?cp1=1

The real business starts at around 7:43pm with the total eclipse at around 8:00pm. Watch it and let us know what you thought. I tried to watch last year's Lunar eclipse but there were just too many clouds; tonight is supposed to be clear, at least round these parts.

Horse shit! I don't get out of work till 9:30. I like seeing this stuff; I think I missed the last one cause of the cloudy sky, but today's sky is relatively clear, and now I'll miss this one cause of work. BLOODY HELL.

I hear you Barto. I've missed a lot of astronomical events because of work. "Horse shit" were my exact sentiments.

Dumb question, maybe. If the total lunar eclipse is starting at about 8:06 east coast time, does that mean it is starting at 5:06 west coast time or is there a delay? I would think there is no delay because it is the position of the Earth not the spin of the Earth that matters in a lunar eclipse, but I'm not certain. Anyone know the answer?

I didn't know, but I was/am watching it happen. I have a wedding party to get to, but maybe I'll quickly pull out the old scope.

well I watched it. I had hoped it would be more bright. I saw the last bit go into shadow but there was always this slight yellow glow around one side so for the longest time I wasn't sure if it was complete or if there was still a bit more to go that I couldn't see with my telescope.

It glowed only a light red - looked bluish through the telescope. MSN said there would be a lot more visable stars tonight and by Golly there were an assload of stars.

I took some pics but none came out. One actually did come out and, surprisingly, it was the one I took through my telescope - I didn't think that would work.

The only thing really worth mentioning is that I saw the biggest friggen bat fly by. I mean this thing looked like a goose only it had to be a bat b/c this is bat country and that weren't no goose.

Why did it have to be so GD cold tonight?

Hey realmean, what kind of telescope do you have? We watched part of the eclipse tonight - from *inside* the house. Quite lovely. During the middle, one half was a red-violet and the other lavender. We had very few stars due to cloud cover.

Cool about that bat! I LOVE bats! Wonder what kind it was.....

The view was awesome in Southern Ontario. First time I have actually witnessed something like this with such ease. Really strange. It makes you think of stuff you aren't even sure what the question might be? Anyone else get a good view?

it's an Infinity by Meade. It's a really cheap beginners telescope but that's all I need it for.

apl, I gotta go watch the Wrath of Khan but remind me to tell you about my close encounter with ze bats later ok?

every 3000 years there is a 100% lunar elcipse which precedes a 100% solar elcipse aprox. 2 weeks following.

So yeah, I saw that shit. and in 2 weeks, be ready for the solar eclipse...

This is not true. Depending how you define "total" (less than 0.5 degree difference in the moon's and earth's ecliptic), there will be dozens of total lunar eclipses in anyone's lifetime. The next total lunar eclipse will be on May 4, 2004 and it will be visible in S. America, Asia, Africa and Europe.

Hell, even a Saros cycle takes only slightly longer than 18 years.
http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/LEsaros/LEsaros.html

The next total lunar eclipse visible in roughly the same area as last night's eclipse will be October 28, 2004 and that one will have a much larger umbral magnitude than the one last night (meaning: more shadow coverage). In fact, Oct 28th's total lunar eclipse will take nearly an hour and a half from start to finish. Last night's only took 24 minutes. Barely a total lunar eclipse if you ask me.

Mark those calendars!

how can you have more shadow coverage than 100%? Isn't 100% 100%?

And why does the time matter so much?

this is the picture I took through the telescope. It's really terrible and I wish I had had the setting right and taken one when the moon was red. I'll work on it another time and try to get some focus.

Scutor, you're assuming real astronomers measure the totality of eclipses with a percentage just because Little Black Francis does. They don't. [edit] And why does the time matter so much? What do you think it means when the time it takes for a moving object to spend in another moving object's shadow can be different? It's either slowing down (which is unlikely) or the juxtaposition of those two objects is slightly different.

Ok, what the hell are you talking about? Also (and maybe my reading of msg board lingo is way off here) you seem to have quite an attitude. If I'm misreading I apologize, I'm awfully confused.

I think what cvanepps is saying is that 'more shadow coverage' means the area of the shadow projected by the earth will be greater in the October 28th 2004 , so the moon will be in the earth's shadow for longer.

Sorry guys, if I'm causing problems. I meant no harm. It's just that "the devil is in the details" and details are difficult to communicate using a forum, especially astronomical concepts. I'm willing to drop it if you are.

But hey, did you know the distance between the earth and the moon grows larger by about 1 inch per year?

http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/solarsystem/moon_distance_020114.html

I'll shut the fuck up now.

All is good. Guess I was misreading; I apologize. Yes details are difficult to get into on a forum and no I didn't know that about the one inch - very interesting - That should make some sort of difference over thousands of years no?

Yeah, might run into Mars or Venus..hehe.. (Which is closer? I'd guess Mars..)

Does that mean we might have to worry about moons from other planets some day too?

Generally the future looks rough..but this is ridiculous! <g>

Hey, sorry for taking so long apl. Actually it's not even a good story but I thought it was incredible. I happened upon a marsh at dusk a couple of months ago when all of a sudden what seemed to be a hummingbird swooped right past us. We soon realized that it was a bat and that there were dozens more. They were feeding on the bugs near the lake and were flying within inches of us. Their flying seemed so sporadic that we had to duck a few times but they're pretty accurate, we were probably overreacting - they did come awfully close though and wait til the last second to pull back.

My first reaction when we realized they were bats was to run away but my friend assured me it would be ok. We went back a couple of more times and when the weather gets better I plan to go again. It was the most amazing thing I've ever done - I never thought I'd be that near so many bats and just watch them. They had no interest in us whatsoever. What a show.

cool story - yeah - bats won't run into you - usually if a bat gets in somebody's hair, it's because they've been running around and flailing their arms in panic. heheh! there is a way cool bat exhibit in chicago that lets you walk through an open air bat room, full of fruit bats. lovely lovely creatures.
