though many consider Teenager Of The Year to be Frank's best album, i'm curious if there is anyone who would consider The Unambiguously Yellow Album to be equal, if not better..
TOTY has more songs.. and admittedly, some of Frank's absolute best are on there. but can you deny the sheer brilliance of TUYA? Fu Manchu, Los Angeles, Ten Percenter..
it's a tough call..

I think the fact that TOTY is a double album makes it more appealing because are a lot more songs, 22 right? Even with such classis as Parry the Wind, Adda Lee, Everytime I go Around Here and the likes, TUYA just fewer songs, but they're all masterpeices.
I'd have to vote TOTY on size, and no color controversy, As fas as heart, I'd think they are equal.

TOTY hands down. You should see my kids asking to hear the Hoo Hoo song. They never ask for anything from TUYA. TOTY is a family favorite with lots of catchy sing along songs. The Hoo Hoo song, the Ole song and my sons new favorite The Phoenix song.

Ever since my daughter starting requesting the Hoo Hoo song my son has moved on to the Phoenix song. Though he still sings along to the Hoo Hoo song. Sibling rivalry, never to early to start.

I would say TUYA, simply because of the higher concentration of high quality songs. TOTY is a little bit patchy, and I've never been keen on double albums in general. This is just personal opinion though.

Let's not forget, Cult of ray. Very rock and roll. Come to think of it , I don't think I can actually pick a favorite one. |

You cheeseheads! TOTY is a double album since ya get 2 records with it. It IS a single cd, and a single cassette, but if you're going to use the phrase album, then it's a double. I think it translates well into the single cd format. |

I still think you can call a cd an album.
An album indicates a collection of records.
A record indicates the actual recorded song.
I don't think that the words album or record have to indicate a format, ie vinyl.
That's just someone from Nashville (me) talking though. |

Big Red! at the end of the song. Whenever it ends they want me to play the Hoo Hoo song again, but now that my daughter likes it too my son insists on hearing the Phoenix song or "Space Is Gonna Do Me Good." When it ends, SIGDMG, he'll say to her "You like it? That's my song. Do you like it?" |

word up El Barto. you know what's going on..
TUYA is all i've had in my car cd player this week. i NEVER get sick of it. seriously.
i can't get enough of horns.. i wish Frank would get some serious horns going on again on one of his records. does The Snake not prove that horns and Frank = good.
and this is coming from someone who truly hates the sax, as discussed in another thread a while back. but i think the sax solo on The Snake is one of the highlights of the album.

There's not even a question. TOTY. The hoo hoo song rules. When I seen Frank on the FB&TC's self titled album tour they started the show off with it. One of my favorite live moments. And what a great show starter...You hear that baby and you just know the show is going to be FUN. |

I think TOTY is better than TUNA. I'm not a big fan of fish.
Seriously, though, I think TOTY is better, probably mostly because of the sheer number of songs. On the other hand, I think some of the better songs are on TUYA. Neither of them have any really weak songs, though.
And, for what it's worth, I actually DO like fish, but not tuna.

I discovered Frank Black (and then the Pixies) with TOTY. I was in a record shop, I heard Pong/thalassocracy and became crazy with Frank. You'll never get bored with it, so many different styles and rythms, and it has Freedom Rock, Fazer Eyes, Superabound, Speedy Marie, Calistan, Headache, Abstract Plain, White Noise Maker...

I used to like TUYA more, now it's TOTY. It'll probably go back at some point. It's like Zeppelin or the Beatles .. you get to a point where you don't even have a favorite anymore because it's all good - so at different points different ones will be your fave. I love the Hoo Hoo song, and I love tuna too. Even canned, as long as it's packed in water and not oil. That crap gets all over the place. Even if you use a strainer, it manages to get all over the place. Give me some of that Ahi, baby .. now we're talking ... |

Give me TOTY, but, this is like choosing among your kids.
So much stuff on TOTY. I love to play "2 reelers" for someone and tell them its about the 3 stooges or The Vanishing Spies meaning. That is when they look at me like I am some sort of maniacal music nerd/genius or they look at me like I am their new guru. Always something to discover on TOTY.
Floop - I'm out on the horns in the Snake. For some reason it sounds to me like some guy busted into the room with his sax and started playing just long enough for someone to shove him back outside. It just seems a bit out of place and I wonder what Rich would have done with that solo. JMHO, of course. |
