I am both a huge frank black and rem fan. I have noticed a lot of similarities in both of them. I'm more of an old rem fan, meaning the IRS label years but i like their new stuff too. Micheals' lyric writing reminds me of Frank blacks' also in that they both use obscure references. The albums DOTS by Frank and Rem's 3rd album "fables fo the reconstruction" remind me a lot of each other as with others. Just wondering how many other FB fans are also REM fans, or do you think they are just a bunch of nerd rocking, enviro- concious garage rockers. MUSIC IS SO SUBJECTIVE.

I'm an REM fan and Fables of the Reconstruction is one of my favorites. Back then they were known as southern band (or at least southern influenced) and I think that is particularly evident on Fables. I don't, however, see a big similiarity in the lyrics of Stipe and Black. I guess I think of Stipe's lyrics being more stream of conciousness (strung together phrases) and way back then the words were pretty difficult to interpret (he supposed mumbled because of his shyness). Somewhere there's a quote from Frank (I believe in reference to Tom Yorn) about wanting to have lyrics clearly sung.
The Dead Milkmen ruled as well. Their lyrics were always painfully clear. |

I liked REM back around the Fables of the Reconstruction days, and Life's Rich Pageant was a good album too. I bought their albums intermittently up until Monster, and then bought nothing new from them since. I don't know exactly why, I just lost interest in them. Mainstream REM, even if they didn't want the fame like they said, is not very good. |

I agree with you. I loved everything by R.E.M. in the 80's, especially their albums "Green" and "Murmur". Since Bill Berry (the drummer) left the band, I lost all interest in them. Their last album "Reveal" sounds quite boring to me. I think they better had stayed at the IRS label and never played songs like "Shiny Happy People" or "Everybody hurts". They are really mainstream. A nice "back to the roots" album was "New Adventures in Hifi" from 1996, which was their last good album, I think. But that's all just my personal opinion :-).

the instrumental break in 'dig for fire' - with the chiming guitar part - could've been lifted right out of an r.e.m. song.

Yeah right on! Love all things REM, was just thinking how cool they are whilst watching their new DVD today. I think their whole career is pretty consistant Monster and New Adventures are particularly good. Couldn't listen to 'em all day tho, not like Frank or maybe Mudhoney! Anyone else love that band?? |

wHAT I meant by them being similar (especially in "fables") is that they give references to a lot of local stories or they tell those stories

They are similar because both Michael Stipe and Frank Black rarely write auto-biographical lyrics; focusing more on stories about other real or imaginary people.
That and the bald thing.

Which leads to the question, "If you're on a desert island, and you're a small man, and you have your choice between Frank and Michael..."

I'd pick Frank becuase he can play guitar and accompany himself.
