Frank often says that Neil Young is one of his strongest influence. Thanks to Frank, I started to listen to Neil Young 5 years ago, and understood immediatly why NY has been so important for Frank.
Their music are very different, but you can easily find how NY's way to play guitar and to sing have had a great influence on FB.
I'm just curious to know if there's a lot of FB's fans who listen to NY too. Anyway, for them who 've never listened to Neil Young, they should try: I think a FB's fan has a great probability to find something interesting in Neil Young's hudge discography (but they have to be lucky, because NY also made a lot of bad things .
Does someone knows NY's song called "Trans am"? I think his voice in the first verse is really, really similar to Frank's, the first time I heard the song I thought it was him!! Someone else or I'm crazy?

I first listened to NY then found the Pixies and FB. I think that there are some artists that are inspiration for everyone who wants to start playing rock'n'roll and obviously Neil Young is one of them, so there is no surpise that the great FB has been strongly influenced by the great NY.
NY has issued several records and something is bad, especially the period 1980-1987, but it is always good to issue a big number of records even if with some bad things.
Did you ever listened to 'On the beach'(1975) ? It is great but I found it, just for miracle, only as an used vynil but never saw it in a record store and this is a real scandal.
I don't remember 'Trans am' but I will search and see if I will get the same impression.

See you forever

Aw, come on - the 80's were fantastic!! At least better than a lot of the current stuff! (The second-last album with 9-11 song was dreadful..)

Neil is pretty much my first musical influence..been listening since i was like 5, to TRANS. What an awesome album.

I think NY reneissance started with 'This note's for you' and 'Freedom'('88-'89), and after 'Rust never sleeps' I think he issued no remarkable records until 1988, but this is just a personal opinion.
What is sure is that Neil is one of the greater man of Rock'n'roll history !!
What about 'Greendale'? To me it sounds good!

Damn straight on the NY As Great Man Of Rock front.
Everybody agree that there are some very Neil Young-ish bits on SMYT? FB's definitely coming from the same musical angle quite a lot.

You're right Bilgoodman, "I'll be blue" is a typical Neil Young's line!!
"On the beach" is a strong masterpiece, and it has just been released on CD, something like 4 weeks ago. Listen to "on the beach " on CD is like discover a new NY's album, great sensation!!
It's true that NY made some weak album, but I think in almost (almost) every one you can find something interesting, a guitar line or some vocal. It is this kind of artist, even if he makes 3 bad albums in a row, you will always go and buy the fourth one, because it could be a masterpiece.
FB is still a young singer (respect to NY for example, or to David Bowie), and if he continues like this- one (or even two, it's so incredible!!) album per year - his discography will be as hudge as Neil Young's! And at the moment, even if you can find some albums are not some great than others, the average quality of his records is very high, and none is bad.

Last week I went in Paris to see David Bowie, and he played Pixies'"Cactus" and Neil Young's "I've been waiting for you" : my 3 favorite artists reunited (even if FB and FB were'nt really there)in the same gig:so cooooooooooooool!!

How much would you love to hear Frank Black backed by Crazy Horse? All respect to the Catholics, but it would be awesome...

i thought neil young's soundtrack for jarmusch's dead man was great. which reminds me, with word of a new jarmusch movie being out, i recently began to wonder about frank doing a soundtrack for him. not only is there is neil young connection, there is also tom waits.

Neil Young is great, although I understand that some of his music is crappy (but then again he has been releasing albums for fucking ages). I have recently purchased Are You Passionate, which is a great album. My mate is supposed to be getting me Harvest Moon when he returns to China from the UK.... well looking forward to that album.

What are the Neil Young - Must have albums?? Someone post this info asap so that I can inform my friend to pick them up for me whilst he is in the UK.

Dave, that's Are you Passionate.... it's a great album. I thought that song was about Sept 11th.

Neil Young must-haves is tricky but I would say:
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
Harvest
Zuma (FB's fave, I understand)
Ragged Glory

Course, I blatantly don't really know what I'm talking about, but those are good albums.

The must-have NY albums are surely:
Everybody knows this is nowhere
Harvest
After the gold rush
Tonight's the night
On the beach
Zuma
Rust never sleeps
Rust live (incredible live album)
Freedom
Ragged Glory
Sleeps with angels
This note's for you
Weld (another great live album of the 90 years)
Unplugged (beautyful semi-acoustic live)
Greendale.
Surely there are other good albums, according to personal taste, but to me these are the essential NY album to have.
Stuart, Harvets moon is good but maybe not comparable to the ones above.
By the way what do you all think about Greendale? Is it really a great album as I think it is?

Out of the blue and into the BLACK to everyone !!!!!!!!!!!

'Freedom' is my all-time fav. 'Live Rust' is prolly the best 'live' album on the planet.

Tho Stuart, if you like AYP, you might hate everything else..hopefully you'll love everything else that much more!

Decade is a good cross-section of the older stuff..damn there's a lot of material to cover!

Cheers guys.... I'll send my mate an email and buy a load of these albums (although I have some of them). There is a cd store in Bristol, England that sell Neil Young dirt cheap so thats great.

I have a fake copy of Greendale and so far from what I have heard it is pretty good, although when I was recording it to minidisk (I really only listen to music on headphones nowadays) I found that the last two tracks were very skippy. So, I'm gonna have to get another copy. If you don't have 'Are you passionate' then I would recommend it, though it takes a little getting into (but then again thats the same with the majority of Neil Young albums.

The albums I have are:
Harvest (by far the best NY album I have)
After the Gold Rush
Unplugged
Broken Arrow
Mirror Ball
Sleeps with Angels
Mystery Train
Are You Passionate?
Greendale

Dave, as I was listening to that song about 9-11, I was thinking that I had heard that the story of the guys saying 'lets roll' was actually a fabricated lie made up by the US Government.... is this true or have I been misinformed??

Saw the Greendale show in LA...weirdly awesome. He played some hits at the end but the Greendale set was where it was at. "Bandit" really brought the house down.

Yes, On the beach has been released on cd over here, along with some other never released before ( on cd ) albums. I don't go crazy for Greendale, but it has some great moments in it.
Ciao
