Going through my record collection, I rediscovered this Mike Watt-Tribute-Album or whatever. It's from 1995 or so, a double album, and there is this Mike Watt, playing his and other songs with other bands like Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and so on. Also, there is the song "Chinese Firedrill", and FB is singing in it. It is a song I really like, very calm, very good acoustic guitars and Frank singing very, very smooth. Also, the lyrics fit him, they are really strange. For anybody who knows it, I would like to know how you like it... |

this song was actually my introduction to Mike Watt, which I greatly appreciate. great, mellow tune.
I like that lemur, I lick it. That's velvety! |

I went and saw Mike Watt on the tour supporting that album, Ball Hog or Tugboat. The first band was Hovercraft which is Eddie Vedder and his wife. The second band was a new band called Foo Fighters (!!!) It was pretty funny, when they came on stage, everyone was applauding and going nuts. Now at this point, no one had ever heard Dave Grohl play guitar or sing, so the first thing he says is "Stop clapping. For all you know we could suck." They then went into "This is a Call." Rockin.
Mike Watt came next and his band was Dave Grohl on drums, with Eddie Vedder and Pat Smear on guitar. They actually opened with Chinese Firedrill.
One of the best night of bands I've ever seen. |

Mike Watt is the king. I've been waiting years for a chance, and I finally got to see him this past Sunday - it was bloody amazing! Chinese Firedrill is definitely an awesome song. Frank Black is also on the recorded version of another Watt song called Big Bang Theory, which I happen to like better myself.
So yeah, Ball-Hog is an awesome record. It's not exactly a Watt tribute though, it's that he wanted to put something out and he's a highly respected performer so all these dozens of famous rock musicians jumped at the chance to play his songs. Although I was reminded when I saw him play that hardly anyone knows Watt by name, he's all around. His fame first came as bass player for the Minutemen, who have recently gained more commercial notoriety with that TV show (I think that's what it is) "Jackass" using the Minutemen tune Corona as its theme song.
Watt has also gone on to form fIREHOSE, Dos, and Mike Watt and the Secondmen, among countless other projects. It's amazing, the guy always seems to have about 800 things going on at the same time. He also served on bass during the recent Stooges reunion tour, which must have been a huge honour. The man also works as hard as anyone at keeping himself grounded and in close touch with his fans, which I find quite commendable.
I know some of you must know all this; I'm just a little bit of a Watt nerd and some don't seem to have heard of him so I'm doing my ambassadorial duty on his behalf. Even if you don't like his style, his is definitely one of the more compelling stories in rock music, one which I haven't even started to tell here...
Nothing is ever something. |

It's on the E-Ticket Ride ep. I'm not sure, but I think it was only released as a 7". Lots of screaming on this song. I like it.

Chinese Firedrill isn't bad - big bang theory the other mike Watt collabration is fucking cool though. I got hold of it off the 3 disc FB bsides collection that's been circulating in the trading circles.

I love both those songs. I've seen Watt perform both of them live (bass+vocals). Watt has an appealing low-register singing voice, so his version of Chinese Firedrill was really nice, though much different sounding than Frank's. Big Bang Theory, of course, fuckin' Rocked! |
