I guess this qualifies as needing a nerd alert. sorry.
From slashdot.org "SCO Calls GPL Unenforceable, Void" http://yro.slashdot.org/yro/03/10/28/0134242.shtml?tid=117&tid=123&tid=187&tid=88&tid=99
The SCO Unix vs. IBM debacle has been floundering around for a long time now, but this has got my panties (oops, forgot so many of you hate that word, oh well ;)) all up in a knot! First they sued IBM and have put the burden of proof (SCO claims that IBM is using stolen SW from SCO's Unix code in their Linux products) on IBM....and they (SCO) won't publish the supposed offending code. Now the GPL is under attack by this mutated little pipsqueak no-brains bully. This is so utterly ridiculous. I'm hoping the open source community responds loud and clear (but completely within the laws of their native lands, of course...).
From SCO's Reply to IBM's Amended Answer with Counterclaims:
"'6th Affirmative Defense - The GPL is unenforceable, void and/or voidable, and IBM's claims based thereon, or related thereto, are barred. ... 7th Affirmative Defense - The GPL is selectively enforced by the Free Software Foundation such that enforcement of the GPL by IBM or others is waived, estopped or otherwise barred as a matter of equity. ... 8th Affirmative Defense - The GPL violates the U.S. Constitution, together with copyright, antitrust and export control laws, and IBM's claims based theron, or related thereto, are barred.' Comments are pouring in ... not all of them complimentary to SCO or its legal strategy." |

Seriously, I'm not too computer-oriented and I only have a passing knowledge of anything UNIX related. Isn't that the base platform for LINUX? Sorry if I sound stoopid. =( |

Yep. :) And you don't at all - I just post this silliness because it genuinely interests me - not to sound smart...I didn't know jack about computers, etc. before I picked my husband's brain, and then got even more interested and started reading a lot of books in 97....I didn't even have my own computer before then. I eventually went into IT, but now I'm out again. So, I still feel out of place most of the time, but it's all about what you're exposed to - I'm definitely not a brainiac! ;)
The GPL is ``General Public License'', and is the foundation of open-source programming. If you are ever up to a little heavy background reading on open source, there is a good history of it on the "Jargon File" http://www.catb.org/~esr/writings/taoup/html/ch02s03.html |

I've heard that Linux is like a OS for programmers. Or, it is alot more technically-oriented than the user-friendly Windows or Mac OS.
I want to learn more about computers; I just got mine last spring, and before that I had only worked sporadically on them since my mom and dad had a Tandy back in the late eighties. (No Windows, no mouse!) I haven't been exposed to much DOS or UNIX or anything like that. |
