I really enjoy authentic Mexican food from authentic Mexican restaurants. One of the highlights is the free chips and salsa. My girlfriend and I really dig salsa. The problem is, we could never for the life of us find REAL restaurant-style salsa that's any good...all the store bought brands are shit--until recently. During the summer we were visiting my family in MI and we happened to randomly buy some salsa from Meijers (a chain in Michigan and surrounding states...very much like Wal-Mart, but not as hick-ish) called Garden Fresh Gourmet Salsa in a plastic see-through tub. The flavor was Jack's Special. That salsa was gone within 15 minutes after we got home. It was the greatest, as good as if not better than the salsa we have in the restaurants. I was very depressed to notice that the company was based in Ferndale, MI and the realization that it must have been just a Michigan thing...no dice in Pennsylvania--until yesterday. Now that we're in State College, we have a greater variety of grocery stores, one of which being Wegmans. We went there yesterday and what did I see in the refridgerated section under the cheese? Why, it was none other than Garden Fresh Gourmet Salsa! SHIT YES! We now have a local supplier of this fan-fucking-tastic salsa. I highly recommend any salsa lovers out there to check your grocery stores for this brand, because it'll blow your mind and your mouth...in a good way.

Probably sheltered from good salsa in Canada, but the best stuff I've had without anything coming close to competing is Pace Picante. Medium-Hot. Mmmmmmmmmmm.

Jar salsa tastes crappy b/c it's been cooked & is loaded with crap like corn syrup. I'll be looking for some of this stuff--I haven't had any decent salsa at home since I left Madison & its chain of Pasqual's salsarias w/the little take-home containers. I guess I could make my own, but life's too short.

We have a good supermarket salsa here - but now I can't remember the name. It is fresh made! I will have to remember. (this should go in the hiku thread. I am making sense, no!) |

mmm, I love salsa. We made some canned salsa this summer with all of our overabundant tomatos from the garden (we were such numknucks, we planted 27 tomato plants! LMAO), but the salsa didn't turn out as well as we expected. Either too watery or overripe tomatos. We even had habanero peppers in one kind, but it actually came out mild - go figure.
Store brands, I like "Newman's Own" salsas and there's another brand called "Desert Pepper Trading Company" that's also great - both are organic to boot, if that matters to ya. mmmm good! |

For anyone in the LA area (i.e. floop), go to La Estrella taco stand in Pasadena. It's on Fair Oaks one block north of the 210 freeway (at Villa). The salsa there is not only one of the hottest, but best-tasting I have had. I pride myself on being able to withstand some of the hottest Thai and Indian food, but that salsa is *HOT*-- and it has a fantastic smokey flavor. They will sell you a 20 oz. cup of it for $6. That will keep you going for a while, but use it quickly because it has no preservatives and a limited life in the fridge. There is nothing I have found in any store that even comes close. I put it on everything from pizza to burritos to teriyaki bowls.
--edit-- As far as mass-produced salsa goes, I recommend Tabasco chipotle sauce. The chunky tomatoey stuff is not for me. All I want is hot and flavorful. |

I make homemade salsa a whole lot that only takes like 10 minutes to do and it tastes great. I agree that almost all storebought salsa is shit, but the best restaurant salsa anywhere is Chilis, along with the best chips
