Just got up but about to go out. Gotta see a man about some cupboards.
PJ Harvey was great last night (on BBC2) singing alongside Josh Homme and backed up by Queens of the Stone Age. Think they called themselves Desert Sessions. Not sure if this is a collaboration with the aim of producing a record release. Anyone know?
Starsailor were also crooning away...not good (even with a bottle or red wine gurgling away inside) |

Desert sessions is a colaboration between Josh Homme and all his mates, including the amazing PJ Harvey. He goes out into the desert and records songs with loads of other artists.
The songs on Jolls Holland last night were "Crawl Home" and "i wanna make it wit chu", they appear on the Desert Sessions vol 9 & 10 which was released in the UK last week. |

Oak Ridge, TN. It's in my profile. Swimmer lives in Nashville, I believe. He once had a thread asking if anybody else on this board was from Tennessee. (YEEEE-HAW, we got the country music capital of the world, an' Dolly Parton, to boot!!)
When I used to live in Wyoming, and people would hear I was from TN, they would always ask about all the "rednecks," and when people down here learn I've lived in WY they inevitably ask about the ranchers and cowboys, who in this day and age are simply western counterparts to rednecks. |

I'm not the biggest fan of country music myself. Frank & the Catholics have actually turned me on to listening to a little bit more of a "country" sound; I guess they just proved to me that "country-style" music can be good. (i.e. instruments, style) I have yet to find any actual "country" musicians I like though, except for Johnny Cash. Not to say there aren't any, but mainstream country...ugh. |

wow, that scroll can be annoying. I'm gonna edit this soon so we don't have to deal with it.
So lemme ask, what the fuck is with Johnny Cash. I mean I like what I've heard but it seems that for the longest time no one gave a damn about him but in the past year and a half he's become some icon for a younger generation. When did this all happen?

Well, I would say maybe a wee bit longer than a year and a half.
The whole thing with the younger people I believe started with Rubin's American recordings of Johnny Cash.
But really you can't put it all on that. The guy is just real. He's real good and he is real. He is cool and rock and roll and country. He's a bad ass and I'm not just saying that to be trendy.
I realized over the years what a truly awesome individual he is and that part in the 80's where he wasn't en vouge was nothing to do with him, just people's fickleness. He remained the same the whole time.
Dolly Parton is one of the best songwritiers around and although her current face looks like the woman in "Brazil" at the p[lastic surgeon, she's a legend in her own time just as Johnny was and is.
I think when people say they don't like country music...they are completely right. The people who say that are opnly familiar with what's passed off on radio as country and country radio eats it's old.
Listen to Hank Williams Sr., listen to Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, and the architects of that form of music and you will feel something if you have a heart that appreciates a good story.

Honestly, there's just something very earnest and uncompromised about Johnny Cash. Something very basic and pure about his music. I need to buy more Johnny Cash albums. |

You mean by "American Recordings" the albums popularized by his covers of Soundgarden, NIN, and the like? |

Well said Swimmer. I know he's good but, like you said, it's trendy now which is unfortunate for those who don't go in for such things yet still like him.

Most of the older country music I've heard does indeed fit the format of "ballads" or stories. And the artists themselves possess this sort of non-pretentious attitude, a far cry from today when country singers make songs about the finer points of chrome. |

Swimmer is right. A lot of it was due to Rubin's recordings (especially the last one), but I think it also happened because John's health was deteriorating and people started realizing the end was near for him.

Has anyone heard anything by Johnny Horton? I Dled this one song where he said something like "He ain't a nigger, he just smells like one." What was Frank's reference to him in "If it Takes all Night?" The guy seems like a complete bastard.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that reference too. Anyone notice, too, in IITAN that he says "He said we're gonna make El Pasooooall night, if it takes all night"???
it should just end with Paso but he needs the all night to rhyme.

I thought he said "gonna make El Paso tonight, if it takes all...", not el paso all night. That doesn't make sense. Even though my beautiful girlfriend is asleep in the next room, I'm sadly awake. Can't sleep a peep. SoOO I'm watching Residents DVDs, uninstalling illegal version of Studio MX and installing a legit version (thanks, ma), and updating quicktim... *NERD ALERT* What the HELL was that?! Oh, nevermind. |

I know it doesn't make any sense but that's all I've ever been able to hear. "Tonight" doesn't sound like it'd fit in though and I don't think it's in the lyrics. Does anyone have the lyrics so they can settle this?
