One would assume that most artists ( although I wouldn’t necessarily include FB in this generalisation) would place their stronger songs nearer the beginning of their albums. I was playing Pistolero the other day and decided that, for me, So. Bay was the best track on the album. Had a quick glance through the old record collection and I struggled to find many more. Only other candidates I could come up with:
PJ Harvey - ‘The Dancer’ from ‘To Bring You My Love’
Radiohead - ‘Street spirit’ from ‘The Bends’
Magazine - ‘Permafrost’ from ‘Secondhand daylight’
Porno for Pyros - ‘Orgasm’ from ‘Porno for Pyros‘
Slayer - ‘Seasons in the Abyss’ from ‘Seasons in the abyss’
Any science and/or meaning in this or am I talking out my derriere?
p.s. apologies in advance to Carolynanna for mentioning Slayer again.

I figure you want to end on a song that makes people say, "I want to give this another spin". Especially someone like Frank "You won't like any of my damn records if you only give it one spin" Black. When I hear the Black Rider at the end of BLD, I always start into California Bound. And of course, it's the end of the CD, so I go back to track 2...
Though that's an exception since BLD is the only bookended album. But I hear 'ya on So. Bay. Pie In The Sky, too. The magnificent conclusion to Manitoba/SMYT.
I'm sure there are others. I'm just going to have to think about it...

science wise it seems when a really strong track is at the end it would leave the impression of a better L,P so many variables at play here though. like if it was the only decent track or if it were the worst. i used to like that permafrost song by magazine but it is actually pretty ugly in comparison to much of their other stuff. did you like 'magic, murder and the weather'? -that went into being a cutout almost instantly but i actually like it. Devoto was really good (what's he doing now? -Luxuria was a valient attempt) but moody to say the least. his solo disc was O.K. 'correct use of soap' would be my fave pick i suppose. i guess i'm kind of jaded on the final track thing and frank is as much to blame as anyone because his putting songs like manitoba at the end of a disc was getting to be an old trick. BLD, frank black and the catholics and DW seem to vary off that path though. manitoba is a very last track sounding song so it will take me awhile to really appreciate it.

I like all of the Magazine albums although they were a bit patchy after Real Life and Secondhand Daylight.
Howard Devoto collaborated with Pete Shelley again last year. They called themselves Shelleydevoto and the album was called 'Buzzkunst' - what wags. Bit of a wacky affair, some screamy bits, some electronica and a dash of punk guitar. Definitely not boring but not a total success.
Anyway Devoto and Shelley will always be remembered for the classic punk anthem 'Boredom'. Pure genius.

In sequencing songs, there are two schools of thought for me.
1. Put the songs in the order they make sense thematically.
2. Put the stronger songs up front if you think people will get bored. |

XTC's The Big Express, which ends with "Train Running Low On Soul Coal," immediately comes to mind. I'd say that's the best song on the album. I know some people think "The End Of The Tour," the last track on TMBG's John Henry, is the best song on there. It's not my favorite, but it's certainly a great song and a strong ending.
In general, I'd say ending with a strong song is a good idea, both for the aforementioned reason of making people want to listen to the album again, but also so no one will stop the CD before the last song.

COF was right, Manitoba is a stunning closer.
I would also mention: Suede - Dog Man Star ('Still Life') Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon ('Brain Damage/Eclipse') Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed ('You Can't Always Get What You Want') The Clash - London Calling ('Train In Vain' is possibly the highlight, but the first half as a whole is better) Weezer - Weezer ('Only In Dreams', goes out on a high, although its difficult to say which part of the album is best...
Consider this: Third/Sister Lovers by Big Star peaks in the middle, with Holocaust and Kanga Roo...

I can't figure that one out. Sure it's a good song, but I'd barely rate it even middle of the pack on John Henry. My pick for final song being the best right now goes to Like Suicide on Soundgarden's Superunknown, because I just listened to it and that's one amazing song.
I bet if a lot of people here read this topic they'd say Gouge Away. Everyone seems to bow down to that song.

Even though I don't always listen to it, I do love the end of MAnitoba. I love, as someone here once put it "the guitar/trumpet duel."
I really dislike the second Black Rider as an ender. It's a good song but I always want the album to end with 21 Reasons. I almost always turn off the cd after that song; it's just so powerful. I hate going from an extremely powerful song like 21 Reasons into a comparatively dull song. Even the rush for the stop button is too disturbing for my liking. For that reason I rarely hear Whispering weeds and Black Rider 2.

It is kind of odd going from Manitoba to Nadine... Two very different songs, but equally ace. As I've probably said many times before, I think Manitoba would make a good encore closer, but you'd really need to get someone in to do the trumpet part, it just wouldn't be the same otherwise.

I think lots of artist have the good songs in the begining AND in the end the openers must be up tempo and the closers more like ballads (like SMYT)
my own amateur demo's work like that anyway
