Reading that thread on peoples favourite computer games got me thinking of my fave in-game tunes from over the years. I started thinking, now that so many games are using a real soundtrack with top name bands etc. does this mean that in-game music is on it's last legs. I think the composers on old Snes, Megadrive (whatever retro console of format you'd like to insert) never really got the credit they deserved. Those guys came up with some of the catchiest melodies I've ever heard. I'm thinking in particular games like switch blade on the amstrad or super mario kart (any of the mario games really). Anyone got any game midi's they want to link to? This ones cool...

I agree, from what I've heard, that vid game music is getting shittier. This band business is new to me though.
NES had some amazing stuff. When John Williams composes an NES (Zelda) score with a full orchestra, you know it's something special.
I have a few links to great vid game music downloads; I'll see if I can track them down.
Those who haven't already should check out The Minibosses.

The band thing is mostly with sport sims or racing games just so they can slap that 'featuring tracks by feeder' sticker on the case. But I can see it going that way with more genres in the future. David Bowie once did a score for a game called 'the nomad soul' I think, which was cool cause it was all original, but there's too many cases of just throw in whatever tracks that fit so we can ship. Zelda did have some great tunes. I loved the theme from columns and also the first level music from 'captain american and the avengers' on the mega drive. It's amzing how many of my schema's are taken up by electronicly synthisised beeps. Oh shit im forgetting the music to street fighter 2, for instance blanka's stage. They were really great tunes.

I've played Captain America and the Avengers for Sega G. It did have good music. Street Fighter music is the shit.
As I recently mentioned in some other threads, I love the music in FFVII and River City Ransom.

I loved the soundtrack to the old Monkey Island games. Ron Gilbert, you diabolical.
And I hum songs from King's Quest 6 to this day. Not that piece-of-crap-over-the-top title track, whatever it was, but little in game songs like the melody you play with the snapdragons and the "Skeleton rag" or whatever where you get the keys to the underworld by getting the gatekeeper to dance up a storm.
I always loved the theme music for Space Quest as well, and of course who doesn't know the intro to Mario? I'm having trouble thinking of other console game music that I can still remember... Bubble Bobble, ummmmm.... :)
I've always been a PC Gamer.

yeah, they're supposed to be putting out a new album soon but I think it'll all be available online just as their last album was.

Derek, do you still have that cover you did of the Mario Bros theme? I think I lost the mp3 and I loved it. Really.

The overall quality of video game music was excellent in the late 80's.
Best video game music ever from the best video game ever: Lemmings (the Atari ST version)
By the way I'm eagerly looking for the -ACTUAL- music from this game. All the Lemmings music I foung on the internet didn't sounf like the original.
Anyway, Am I the only one here to have fond memories of the Atari age? Was the Atari ST as big elsewhere as it was in France? Am I the only one to have old computers/consoles still plugged?
ps: If someone could post Derek's cover of Mario bros, it would be nice. (If Derek agrees of course) |

If you're trying to get the original Lemmings music why don't you download an Atari ST emulator and the lemmings rom and then just use a program like total recorder to record the music straight from the game. That way you'll be able to save it into an mp3 format or whatever you like.

I'm pretty proud of the fact that over the years I've only sold about 1 or 2 consoles. My collection currently stands at... 1 Megadrive (genesis) 1 Super Nintendo 1 Amstrad GX4000 (Th worst selling console of all time I think, but the first one I ever owned) 3 Gameboys (Pocket, Colour and Advance) 1 Ps2 1 Dreamcast 1 Sega Saturn 1 N64 1 Tiger Gamecom (Anybody remeber this one? Horrible, nasty little handheld. 1 Original Playstation
Phew, think that's about it. Suffice to say most of them are sitting in drawers collecting dust, but the snes still sees quite a lot of Mario Kart and Streetfighter 2 turbo battles. The Megadrive also makes it out of retirement every once in a while for some Street of Rage action. :)

Holiday Son, I have fond memories from the Atari age. I remember my mom made me sell mine at a yardsale but I kept the game Galaxian cause I loved it so much. Jut the other day, at a yardsale, I bought an Atari and a Commodore. I couldn't get the Atari to work but I haven't given up hope and the Commodore was missing wires that I'm hoping to be able to replace.

well I wasn't actually looking for them, I just happened upon them. I got that Atari, Commodore and old record player to play all my 78s fo 15 bucks. when the Atari didn't work and I realized the Commodore was missing wires I called the lady up and she gave me back $10 as was out agreement. I offered to give them back to her but she didn't want them so I'm gonna hold on to the Commodore at least and if it works, great - a free Commodore.
