This has probably already been asked but I just wanted to know if you guys preferred one over the other.
As for me, I like Surfer Rosa's version more though I know some people are extremely put off by all the wackyness.

The drums are recorded better in the Surfer Rosa version (of course they are, it's Steve Albini!), so that really does it for me. Particularly the kick sound. It sounds very flat and small in the COP version. I like Frank's vocal performance in the SR version better as well.

hmm... I like the Pilgrim version better than Surfer Rose. I like the way the acoustic fades in....in such a way that it disguises the time signature of the song until the kick comes in. Plus I like the acoustic sound better than on Surfer Rosa, which is thin and small...like if they recorded it from the internal pickup of an acoustic electric. The Pilgrim version is tighter too....more concise, and I actually like the sound better than Rosa's reguardless of the engineer. Plus the Rosa version has a _very_ audible edit at the 2:27-28 mark.
But...I think the live b-side version takes the cake!

I think the intro to the Surfer Rosa version is the best intro he's ever done. I play it over and over. Oh bloddy hell, now I have to go post that is the "Best Intros" thread. It didn't occur to me til now.
I'll have to listen for that edit spoon.
Semper ubi sub ubi.
Edit: well I can't find that thread now- I refuse to go further than three pages in. I think it might've been for just FB anyhow. |

The Surfer version rocks harder, obviously, but I do love the subtle Pilgrim version, especially at the very start -- he sounds very creepy indeed, and when the kick drum sleazes its way in... ahhh. I always think that would sound so cool on a dance floor, even though I don't go in for that stuff at all...

i prefer the come on pilgrim version. joey's guitar sounds much more spirally, too crisp on the surfer rosa one for me. the mix of the surfer rosa version is more interesting i guess, with the vocals doubled, or something like that, and the more muted acoustic sound. the panning on joey's guitar feedback on the pilgrim one is really creepy, it kind of moves across now and again, and i love it. someone should use it for a weird horror film scene.... also, i got come on pilgrim on vinyl recently, vamos sounds great on it.... *crackle*.

I prefer Surfer Rosa's version. I love the rythm, and the famous: "She said: "Don't tou- anybody touch this is my stuff." And I said "You fucking die!" Songs in Spanish are great too. The ryth of this song is really cool.

I'd go with Come On Pilgrim as well, although I couldn't quantify it. Perhaps I'm subconsciously prejudiced against Steve Albini.

Yes! I love the edit. It adds to the sublime wackiness of the SR version. I must admit though that the acoustic guitar on the SR version (and SR in general) is rather unintelligible. |

From best to worst:
1) Gigantic ep 2) Surfer Rosa 3) Come on Pilgrim
Let's start a petition to make the Catholics play this one in concert. I want to see Rich soloing like mad on it.

I think I prefer the Surfer Rosa version better, there's just a lot more whacky stuff going on in the background. Come On Pilgrim seems more rigid like they were trying to get the perfect take, Surfer Rosa seems more relaxed, I don't know.

I always liked Vamos a lot, so I just can't decide. However, if I would have to choose, it would be the Pilgrim version, and that's for one reason: it was the first that i heard, and I was with a friend of mine and I remember saying: gosh, that sound like some kind of frenzied black and white cartoon, it's so psycho. It was also the first song I heard from the early Pixies era, and for me it represents the essence of Pixies sound and songwriting. I mean, that punk rock / noise / irony thing that I hope is still not dead, expressing itself on the weird guitars and Frank's desperado vocals. Also, David Lovering performs a true stamina job throughout the song. A personal favorite, for sure.
edit: oh yeah, I nearly forgot! the fact that it is such a Pixies song would make it almost impossible to be played by the Catholics, do you realize that?
Oh, there's an spanish grammar error in the intro... "Estaba pensando sobre viviendo" should mean "I was thinking about living" but the actual translation for that would be "Estaba pensando sobre vivir", i.e., the verb should be in the infinitive, not gerund.

Thanks! That's always been my impression about some of the early Pixies songs... Well, you should try to watch any lysergic cartoon, like SpongeBob, and listen to Pixies simultaneously. Oh yeah, and get stoned before such session. It's wild! LOL
Make a cartoon?! Are you a animator?

Spongebob works on sooooo many levels, I hate it when people pin these kids shows down as for kids only.

I never say any cartoon is for kids only. I mentioned in another thread that I watch chalk zone and that's a cartoon that most people would say really is just for little kids. Sponge Bob just sucks, imo. Everything about it annoys me.

| I didn't much like Ren & Stimpy, either, and Spongebob seems like the same sort of show. |
