I appreciate that this may be a topic you've covered before, but I'm at work and really, really bored, so work with me here. What are the bands (aside from the Pixies/FB&TC's etc) that you've really genuinely loved? You know, to the point of actively searching out all the songs they've recorded, being kind of obsessive about, and all that...
For me, my first love was Radiohead. I got into them in around late 96/early 97 on the strength of the bends. I was obviously overjoyed when it was announced that their new album (OK Computer) was being released that summer, and I eagerly bought it on the first day of release, despite not having a CD player. That album is still one of the best I've ever heard. However, by the time of their next (Kid A), I'd moved on to my hard rock/punk phase and didn't really appreciate it. For a time, though, Radiohead were my life.
The only other band I've properly loved were the Wildhearts (you Yanks may not be overly familiar with this band). They were up there with Therapy? as the finest Britrock band of the nineties, and their first three albums are genuine classics (Earth Vs. The Wildhearts, PHUQ and Fishing For Luckies for you newbies). Interestingly enough, I never actually owned any of their albums, I had them all copied onto tape for me! I do own, however, a 7" pizza disc of the TV Tan single, and the Sick Of Drugs CD single, complete with grass mat (see the pun...!). Thats enough of my reminiscing. I'd be well interested in what other bands boarders truly love. I've noticed a couple of They Might Be Giants fanatics out there...

The bands who I have trully got into other than FB&C / Pixies are:
Skid Row: Sad but true, but this was when I was about 16. Managed to get on stage with them by clinging to Sebastian Bachs leg after I had crowd surfed to the stage,
The Cure: This is one of the best British bands of the late 70's, early 80's til the early 90's. How Robert Smith has not been knighted is beyond me. I am still hoping that they'll pull a cracking album out in the future. If you want consistency then The Cure is the answer (not including WMS, or Bloodflowers).
The Doors: Got into them just after Uni, as I didn't like all the fuss that was made about them by my fellow students. Great band, who produced 6 cracking albums. Just rediscovered them after not listening to them for a few years..... magical music.
Neil Young / Bowie.... just started getting into these guys but like what I hear so far.

As open as I try to be about other kinds of music, Skid Row is unforgivable. Good call on the Cure though. What time is it in China? Its 11-30 here, and there appears to be virtually no-one on the board, I guess because its about 3-30 US time...

Just gone 6:30pm.... class in just under half an hour.... fuck! I actually purchased the new Skid Row album (minus Bach) as it cost less than a quid and wanted to hear what it is like.... not as bad as I thought it would be. Yeah, this board does tend to go quiet around about this time when the Americans / Canadians are at home sleep wanking.

At least the class is advanced students, teaching beginners at this time is like having a wank when you're on speed.

I teach the advanced level some crude words every now and again but I don't think they'd understand that kind of phrase, and wouldn't want to have to demonstrate the word 'wank.'

Bands I've loved: - Led Zeppelin; everyone was into Led Zep back in high school, and everyone wanted to form a band to cover Led Zep songs. That's what I did too. - Sonic Youth: that was just after my Led Zeppelin obsession, when I entered University. Unfortunately I stopped buying their albums after 1000 Leaves for some reason. - There was a year (1997) when I got mad about Björk. Collecting Björk CDs is very expensive, so I'm not really obsessive about getting every single by her, but I buy all her albums anyway. - Nowadays, the bands I try to buy every release from are the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Roxy Music, les Wampas (French punk band) and David Bowie.

Swervedriver. Four LP's, and about three or four more worth of b-sides and rarities. I have it all plus a gaggle of live and radio shows. Still, easily the most overlooked band of the last twenty years. |

The Smiths. From the age of 15, when I discovered Meat is Murder by accident (my brother had bought it thinking it was a punk record!), until they broke up in '87, they were all that mattered to me. I knew all the songs by heart, bought the mags, etc.
Throwing Muses and Kristin Hersh. I think they're the best thing since the invention of milk chocolate. To paraphrase a famous statesman, Throwing Muses were Kristin Hersh plus electricity... and Kristin, boy, does she rock. TM matter a lot more to me than Pixies. That's not a judgment, that's a fact -- that's how it is for me. I can spend weeks without listening to any Pixies. I can't spend two days without listening to some KH/TM.
That's about it really.

It would have to be .......The Chameleons!!.
First record bought in about 1984/5. Followed them avidly throughout University days but never managed to see them live which is much regretted. Did manage to see The Sun and the Moon at the Ritz in Manchester (post Chameleons band put together by Mark Burgess in 1988).
Currently augmenting my scratchy vinyl collection by buying cd equivalents (some of the vinyl bought in the US funnily enough - from a great record shop on Melrose Avenue in LA, called Arons I think) . I am actually seriously comtemplating spending over £50 on a Sun and the Moon cd via ebay. I'm sure this is very sad.

The other three for me that spring to mind are:
Smoking Popes - now disbanded b/c the lead singer found God. How sad. Sleater Kinney - love love LOOOVE them! and Red Hot Chili Peppers - who I was crazy about in high school. Am less so now, but I still like them for nostalgia reasons. |

Falco's Rock Me Amadeus is far from embarassing.
These are the bands I've been absolutely mad about at one point or another in my life, wherein I've sought out every single one of their songs, b-sides and otherwise.
Middle School: U2, Pearl Jam, Nirvana. I had literally every note these guys committed to tape memorized, I still do actually. Though U2 and Pearl Jam's recent releases have fallen a bit out of fervor with me, I still followed them religiously until a few years ago.
post-middle school:
Sonic Youth: First "indie" band I ever got into, insanely obsessed for a long time, still one of my very favorites.
Joy Division: Wow, just amazing.
The Fall: Felt like I was hearing music for the first time..
Guided by Voices: I have over 40 of their CDs.
my latest is Swans. Very scary, but simply amazing once they started writing actual songs. I'm avidly buying every Young Gods Records release. |

My first major music obsession would have to be Nirvana. I engrossed myself in Nirvana for a good 3-5 years. Whenever I get into a new band, I do everything I can to research them and learn about their story and history. I like to know about the story behind the music and such.

I have thrown a riduculous amount of money at Guided By Voices and related side projects. RIDICULOUS. It's almost a compulsion. Though it's tapered off in the last year, as I'm wasn't really pleased with the second Circus Devils and the Bob mini-lp "Motel of Fools", so I didn't pick them up. But still, I've got a lot of Bob.

I was obssesed with Nirvana all throughout High School. In elementary school, I really listened to nothing but Billy Joel. I still like him, it's fun to be able to sing along and make people wonder how you know the words. Good stuff... |

I really didn't buy much music until college. Before that, I only had one real musical obsession: Weird Al. Unlike some people who like Al as a kid and stop later, I still consider myself to be a pretty big Al fan, although he'd no longer rank in my Top Five Bands/Artists list. I'll still buy his new albums when they come out.
After Al, my next obsession was the aforementioned TMBG. I got into them partially because Weird Al is a big fan of theirs (although I've heard the feeling is not mutual). There were also a lot of TMBG fans in my dorm, and I saw them live before buying any of their albums. They've remained my favorite band since I got into them in 1997.
Through TMBG, I was introduced to several other bands about which I'm fairly obsessive, including Moxy Früvous, XTC, Camper Van Beethoven, the Young Fresh Fellows, and, yes, Frank Black. I'll also generally check out side projects by members of bands I like, so I'm trying to get everything by the Minus Five and Cracker. Most of the Minus Five's old material is out of print, but it's mostly just lack of money that's stopped me from buying all of Cracker's albums.
Overall, I tend to be the type who's an obsessive fan of a few bands, rather than a casual fan of a lot of them.

What a fine choice!
The Chameleons are surely one of the most underrated bands of all time. They are maybe THE greatest live band I've ever seen. I'm talking about great in a way that changes the way you look at life. It's an angle I've never quite felt from any other band, including Frank. Almost haunting. I think they plucked some of those great melodies from some other planet and time. I could probably listen to "View From a Hill" for several hours straight and love every second of it.
--edit-- Richard, did you know they rereleased the Sun & the Moon album on CD? I think it has everything except "Elected". If it's just the songs (and not original disks) you're after, get that instead of buying on ebay.

BLT - you are clearly a man with an exemplary taste in music. Agree with the 'View from a hill' comment. In fact 'Script of the bridge' is a stunning piece of work all round, definitely in my top 10 all time list.
I have all of the Sun and the Moon on vinyl but the only way to get 'I love you, you bastard' and 'The boy who sees everything' on cd is via the limited edition 'Great Escape' cd. Very rare and everyone seems to be chasing it. See link below:

Shudder to Think.
Honestly, I don't listen to their albums that much anymore, but I'm still actively collecting everything I can find.
Eventually I plan on creating a discography site. I guess it would sort of justify the collection.

The bands that I loved like that were The Beatles, XTC and Frank Black. And I mean, in the obsessive, find out everything you can, do online seraches, try and track down demos, and generally obsess about them, but not to the point of Lunacy, mind you. Never lunacy. |
