There's one dolphin left in West Edmonton Mall that animal rights activists are trying to get freed. There used to be five or so, but I'm not sure what happened.

Dolphins in malls is news to me. Unbelievable.
Did you guys hear about the fiasco in the States a few weeks back?, where some activists released thousands of minks from a fur farm? You can imagine the massacre across suburbia and surrounding parks and wilderness. Apparently they also started killing an endangered species of duck. Here's a news link I just found.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A43692-2003Oct17.html

This is the type of activism that makes me wonder if it's not perpetrated by a bunch of "plants". Yeah, I'm paranoid, but how could the not see that it would backfire? They unleash havoc on innocent wildlife and captive animals, and they end up looking like raving lunatics.
Why don't people trust the process of our legislative system to address issues? hahahahahahaha!

Heh, well, as you said, raving lunatics can have the best intentions in the world, they're still lunatics.

To be fair, it's the world's largest mall and there is quite a bit of swimming area for them, but anything less than an ocean is not enough :)

Dean I don't think that swimming area is that large.

Most of the last ones died, I think.

Is it still the biggest mall?, I thought Minnesota had some huge mall.

The Mall of America in Minnesota is big, but not as big as West Ed. I think they're building (or have built) one that will be (is) bigger in Japan somewhere, though.

Don't they have that whole area where the Santa Maria is, plus under most of the mall? I really don't know but I'm not defending them keeping dolphins (I just typed donuts - strange) captive to do tricks for us, just saying that size isn't really the issue for the animal activists anyway.

If dolphins are dying as a result of captivity, though, then it's probably time to get them out of there. Maybe he can join that orca off the coast of Vancouver who's lost his pod.

I didn't say they are dying as a result of captivity, all I know is that some died while in captivity.

Is this only applicable to Edmonton dwellers, Carolynanna? I don't wanna stick my nose where it doesn't belong (yeah, like it would be the first time, right? ;) ).

Very sorry if I derailed the topic conversaton from its point - this is very important...

I'm pretty sure all the other dolphins died. It's not like they can escape.

Absolutely dreadful that they did that in the first place..we humans sure do suck.

I heard about that mall in Japan, I hope they build it. Living in a city with a reputation for having the world's biggest mall somehow feels embarassing to me.

Anyway, on to the dolphins: I can't imagine how it would work for them to swim under most of the mall. That would be way too expensive even for the Ghermezians to bother with maintaining. Even if they did, what if a dolphin ran out of air at the far end of the mall and died trying to find its way back to their show area? I guess I don't know the setup that well, but somehow that doesn't seem to make much sense. There can't be surface holes littering the mall for a dolphin to stick its head up and get a breath. Not that keeping dolphins in the mall made sense to begin with. They've all been dying, and last month I read an article saying that when they're all gone the new plan is to bring in 15 (rare?) flamingoes of some kind. It's just ridiculous. I checked but couldn't find a link to the article, it was in the Edmonton Journal last month sometime.

Thanks for posting this Carolyn, I've been wondering what this "Free Howard" thing was. Just yesterday I noticed a guy I work with has this huge Free Howard bumper sticker wrapped around his bike helmet with the name of a different website on it, but I was frustrated by having no idea what the hell it was about.

hmmmm. I was wondering who'd deliver that one. ;) Too bad the context is such an unfortunate one.

I am constantly upset at the current state - I basically see it as a pandemic disease of the human mind. No, I'm not an environmentalist wacko, but a person would have to have some pretty huge blinders not to see that we have already put ourselves and our surroundings in jeopardy. I think everyone should be shown "Microcosmos" and "Winged Migration" in their formative years. It's so bad these days that people that go into Field Biology careers describe their jobs as "mapping the decline". I want to do something, but I don't think many of the activists tactics are ethical or successful.

Does anybody here do something related to this issue and feel like it's worthwhile? I used to work in raptor rehabilitation program, but it was mostly depressing, as the animals suffered due to ignorant program managers, and the educational programs went in one ear and out the other - oh neat! lookit that bird! Is it gonna poop on me? and so on....

Sorry for the rant, but I'm pissed.

i know what you mean and i agree that it is frustrating but i don't think that there's anything to do more than trying to respect what's left of the wildlife.random acts of ecoterrorism like liberating animals from labs and similar can make someone proud for doing something for nature but are pretty much useless and potentially dangerous(did you see danny boyle's 28 days later?).with 6 billion humans on the planet it's impossible to speak about preserving wild nature,it's a matter of space and resources.human activity is like a virus infection:it will keep expanding until the death of the host,in this case planet earth.even if we manage to administrate the expansion there will be no place for species of no immediate interest to mankind.take the example of europe.there is no real wildlife left, just some open air zoos(some pretty big maybe)that they call natural parks.i would be more than happy to be wrong but that's the future for all continents sooner or later.

Feeling helpless ain't gonna help no one..

There's a million groups you can join, and if none of them suit your fancy, start your own.

For me, my passion is animal rights, and so i spend a considerable amount time doing AR work.

This is the latest thing i've been working on:

www.DairyInfo.ca

Not finished yet, but it's coming along nicely if i do say so. =)

Not yet, but I read last month that they plan on bringing in 15 (I think) flamingoes sometime next year. Somehow it seems they described them as "rare" flamingoes, which makes me wonder how the plan crept by the animal rights groups. There's still time, I suppose. I was going to post the article here but by the time that occurred to me it was off the website.

Even if that doesn't go through, there are always animals there. I remember when I was younger there were always a bunch of peacocks where the Body Shop is now. They still have lots of fish right where kids and punks can hammer on the glass at them, and earlier this year the mall hosted something else.....at first I wanted to say sharks, but actually I think it was like an exotic petting zoo. I don't remember exactly what it was, this is seriously frustrating. I'm pretty sure it was lions now that I think about it. There might have been a bunch of other jungle creatures there too, but the spotlight was on the lions, who I've heard looked depressed and bothered. I didn't go, I'd have to ask my buddy to remind me of details.

But yeah, flamingoes. Ridiculous, eh?

Nothing is ever something.
