Chances are none of you have ever heard of Devil Doll or The Mountain Goats but for those who have, do you notice any similarities between them and Franks song "This Old Heartache?"
I think it's Spanishy and sleek like Devil Doll's music and the guitar at the end is just exactly like the guitar in The Mountain Goats' song "Oceanographer's Choice."
I also found it interesting that TMG just signed with 4AD and the lettering on the inside of the cd "Tallahassee" is the exact same type of lettering that the Pixies used, the dangling letters and such. Which album used those dangling letters? I can't recall.

I know the Mountain Goats. I think it's just one guy with guest musicians here and there. I've had an interest in the Mountain Goats for some time, but haven't found any of the albums yet, and have only heard a few songs my friend downloaded. I believe the one I know best is called "Standard Love Song Number 7" or something like that. |

awesome, thanks for responding TarTar, I was pretty sure no one would.
Yeah it's john darniel and random people. sometimes it's just john, the guitar, and the cranking of his recorder.
find some cds!!! order them online, do whatever it takes. I recomment "The Coroner's Gambit." "All Hail West Texas" is also a great one if you're into really lo-fi stuff. Also, if you have the opportunity, check out his side project The Extra Glenns; they're much like recent MG stuff and his partner Frank Bruno is contributing heavily to the next MG album as he did the last.

Hey realmeanmotorscutor,
nothing surprising about the similar artwork, since it's been designed by 4AD's, or more exactly v23's, Vaughn Oliver in both cases. (Aren't the dangling letters on the B-sides CD?)
I'll have to listen more closely to both tunes for the guitar part thing you mention. I love the Mountain Goats' album (a new one is announced on 4ad.com by the way), but being the proverbial "guy with no ear", I never notice these similarities... I'll give it a shot though!
Makes me wonder if FB has heard Darnielle. He's an amazing songwriter for sure.
Oh, and I finally got your Latin joke after... ahem, a long time :-) It suddenly occurred me that I didn't get it because I tried to translate it into French... Good one.

there is a song called devil doll by X. it's on 'more fun in the new world' which also features a song called breathless which is a jerry lee lewis cover and was used in the movie of the same name with richard gere. highly recommended.

That's cool jediroller. I only have the case for my MG cd so I couldn't compare the artists. good info.
I went to 4ad in hopes of finding a release date but no go. That pic of john with the pizza is great; it's been my wallpaper for some time now.
I would absolutely love it if Frank and John collaborated if even for just one song. According to my mother, that would be the two worst voices in music together but I say the best!
blarg, that's not the FB breathless is it? Isn't his a cover of an Otis Redding song?

i saw him this year in Baltimore.. just checking it out since some of my friends are fans. it was just he and a bassist.
his stuff's a little too earnest for me. if that makes sense.. but i think he's a good songwriter.

Hmmm, I actually can't decide if that makes sense or not. Would knowing that all his songs are works of fiction and that he means for people to know that change your opinion?

Realmeanmotorscutor, thanks a lot for your recommendation to listen to the Mountain Goats. So far I have listened to Oceanographer's Choice and Family Happiness. The songs are great ! - the best I have heard this year (next to Frank Black of course). I have ordered Tallahassee and I hope to receive it soon.

That's cool Valhalla. Where did you get those two tracks from? Are they on epitonic.com? If not I know there were a couple of tracks from The MG's "The Coroner's Gambit" on there. You should check them out. Also, if you go to www.themountaingoats.net there are a few good tracks that were never released from an EP called "Jack & Faye."
Tallahassee is much more instrument driven, meaning it uses a lot more instruments. Not necessarily a bad album to begin with, it might make you more open to the raw, acoustic albums.
Let me know what you think of it when you get it and whatever else you might hear of his. Glad you like him. Cheers.

Just listened to "the Monkey Song" by the Mountain Goats. Will get back witcha about whether I like the Goats or not, Chris. (Have to give it a few more listens.) But thanks for the exposure to a band I had never heard of, whether it turns out I like them or not. |

what the heck is The Monkey Song? haha, I don't remember that one.
His voice is very nasal; it takes some getting used to but I think it's worth it. Try a few others. If you're using a file sharing program try these:
Oceanographer's Choice No Children The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton Deianara Crush Going to Queens Going to Bolivia Family Happiness
Also The Extra Glenns (his side project - pretty much The Mountain Goats 2) are great probably more musically pleasing to many.

"...cool air flows through the venitian blinds, and the planets and the heavens are perfectly aligned...i take in my surroundings...i memorize them all...the scuff marks on the stone floor the powder burns on the eastern wall..." --the Monkey Song, as per KaZaa, by the Mountain Goats. |

Oh man, I've never heard that song but I really dig the lyrics. Must hear it. I hate my school!! Stupid banning of File sharing. I might actually have it somewhere on a Kazaa data disc. Thanks glacial.

nothing - didn't realise it was quite so important!
I work for Beggars - you should pop over to the 4ad boards and do some Mountain Goats posts over there -they're in need of some more new topics!
