I like Cat Power, but man, I just don't get her newer stuff. Seems to be going kinda too flat-pop for me, and she's got Eddie vedder working with her? - *shudder*!

Where are we going?
Planet ten!
When?
Real soon!!

I could really care less about all of those bands, Matador lost me when they managed to do nothing with Come, and the original Unsane drummer died.

Is Mary Timony not signed to Matador anymore? Guess she's too "cult" for the list.

A subscription to Emusic is nice because of the access to all Matador records.

I just stumbled across Future Farmers records.. lots of great bands also.

Whatever happened to their $9.99 unlimited DL plan?

They changed their subscription plan. $14.99 for 45 DLs?

Guess they figured they weren't making enough money before. I've heard stories of their kicking off Unlimited subscribers for downloading too many songs. Um, hello, it was supposed to be UNLIMITED? I suppose they're just avoiding that possibility altogether now. The new deal averages out to about 33 cents per song, which I suppose isn't bad. (Doesn't iTunes charge 99 cents per song?) Compared to the old system, though, it's pretty lousy. I wonder if they were actually losing money, or they just got greedy. I'm betting on the latter.

As far as the bands mentioned here, I like the New Pornographers. I was never able to get into Yo La Tengo or GBV, although I do like a few songs by the latter, though, especially "Teenage FBI." Pavement is pretty good, although not as wonderful as all the indie kids seem to think. I haven't heard any of Stephen Malkmus' solo/Jicks stuff, and I've only heard one song by Interpol, and nothing by those other bands.

Guided By Voices have never really taken off in the UK, so if anyone can explain what they're all about (etc.) I'd be mucho grateful... might be worth some Big 5-baiting illegal downloads.

If the Blues Explosion would just play as RL Burnside's band, and someone would kindly take Jon's vocal mic the hell away from him, they'd be my favorite band on the planet.

Hmm... what's GBV all about... ROCK I guess. Bobby P always says it's about the four P's of rock. Pop, Prog, Punk and Psychadelia. That's a pretty good summation. They've got a best of record coming out on Nov 4 (along with a massive box set), so maybe pick up the best of, it covers their whole career. It's a good place to start. Or at least check that tracklist and download some of those songs. www.gbv.com

And here's a link to a stream of one of their absolute best songs, which is from their new record "Earthquake Glue". It's called 'Best of Jill Hives'.

Enjoy!
