That's great - the kids' reactions are so funny! I saw that documentary on early video games that Brian* mentions, too - that was a really cool show. Atari seemed like it was the blueprint for the Silicon Valley/tech hayday companies in the 90s. A hot tub with nekkid people in the office foyer - shazam! that's C-L-A-S-S! A shame when it got sold....

Are those kids geniuses? 'Cause at their age I didn't know anything about Zeus and the Acropolis. Maybe times have just changed that much. |

Fucking kids, how dare they bad-talk NES. Spoiled little brats. Wow...it's hard for me to imagine that these kids were born in the 90s. Even though I'm 20, that makes me feel old. I wonder how it makes you 30 year old bags feel.
I have to hand it to these kids though...they're very smart!

I'm a 30-yr-old bag. I feel like a 17 yr-old in an alien's body, not so much because of how I look, but because I don't jump around and act like a fool nearly as often as I'd like to. I feel old because we own a house and don't get to have much fun, and a lot of the people our age that we have met seem so boring. I generally dance around and do funny walks to the crappy music in grocery stores, and make faces at the cameras, though. I swear I get nervous when I order a beer at a restaurant, I still get carded for cigarettes - so it doesn't seem fair that I have to be 30.
I look forward to going to Magic Mountain (a huge video arcade here in Columbus) next weekend. We still play video games at home, and think of ways to deface public property in shameful ways. My husband and I are going to be perpetual children with a good healthy dose of old-person crotchety bitterness.
Edit: Thought I should add, we actually played Pong a couple weeks ago on Playstation Atari Anniversary Edition Redux, and we both sucked really bad at it! I think it's becuase of the joysticks - you just really need that old ball thingy. I also found out that for some reason, I kick butt at Tempest -WooHoo!
Where are we going? Planet ten! When? Real soon!!

My dad's 62 years old, and he still feels like a young man trapped in an old man's body, or so he says, and he considers women his own age to be "old ladies." That's pretty funny; maybe that's why we men get old and become dirty. |

Hehehe. What impressed me the most is how intelligent and witty the kids were. I mean, they did a very awesome job at making fun of those games! I was laughing my ass off! They should be sitcom writers or something. |

I really don't think the kids said all this. I know the it says they did but, as I recall, EGM was very sarcastic, much like the comic book magazine Wizard. I don't think they'd think twice about lying to us.

Holy shit, that E.T. Thing was the funniest thing I've ever read. Yeah, I posted before finishing these, wanna fight about it?
I always bitch to my friends about the E.T. game but no one ever seems to remember it. All I could ever do was fall in the pit then stretch my fucking neck!! I have never become so enraged. Pointless FUCKING POINTLESS!!!! AAAAAAGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!
phew, ok, I feel the need to include this bit of comic genius even though people could just click the link. These kids articulated perfectly all that has been stewing in me for 20 years. [E.T. falls into a pit]
Tim: What just happened?
John: Ah, you're trapped forever!
Brian: This is sad.
Tim: Why did my head just get farther away? I can't get out.
Kirk: Maybe you should try to go over those dark green things.
Tim: I'm trying. I don't know how.
John: He's using his E.T. powers! What does this have to do with the movie? I don't remember the parts where E.T. falls into pits and makes his neck longer….
Kirk: Quit falling into the stupid pit, you piece of s***!
Tim: Can I stop now?
Brian: This controller's crap; you need to sit on top of the TV to play.
[An icon appears in the pit]
John: Yay! You got a…thing.
EGM: What did you get?
John: A backwards C?
Brian: Reese's Pieces? Am I in a different pit this time?
[Ten minutes later, Brian escapes the pit]
Tim: Whoa, someone has you!
John: It's a lady.
Tim: No it's not. Her hair is E.T.
Sheldon: No! No! Not E.T.! Kill! Kill! Kill E.T.! Glock E.T.!
John: This game is so confusing.
Kirk: No wonder it's the worst ever.
Brian: A flower grew!
Kirk: Piss on it.
Tim: Oh look—it's a dork!
[Points to Elliott on the screen]
John: He put himself inside your body. He bestowed his life force upon you.
Tim: [Points to lava lamp on TV stand] That thing's more interesting.
John: Yeah, let's watch the lamp. It's more fun and less predictable.
Tim: E.T. is unpredictable: You never know when you'll fall into a pit or when a kid is gonna enter your body…I mean use your skin as his own.
Nico: Didn't they bury this game in Mexico or something?
Gordon: Is that a woman?
Becky: It's Zeus. He's taking you away to the Acropolis.
Andrew: The point of E.T. is to see how bad they can piss you off...
Nico: …before you turn it off.
Becky: Maybe another movie company that didn't want you to like E.T. made this game.
Andrew: Yeah, it was some sort of corporate sabotage.
Sheldon: Hurry, make him die!
Gordon: Please.
[E.T. finally dies—general clapping and hurrahs]
Andrew: Eeeeeteeeee phone home.

I had E.T. as a kid and was always perplexed by it. I guess I was too young to realize how shit it actually was.

How old are you el Barto?
I just bought an atari and E.T. came with it. I was so happy to be able to own the worst game ever. My roomate just told me that it actually was included in some "25 worst games" article on gamespy.com.

This is the one that did it for me:

Kids these days are way too cynical. I don't understand how they've never played those games though. I'm 15 (wanna fight about it?) and I've played all of them, and owned all of them except space invaders. Yes, I even own a pong console, though it's coleco not atari. I played donkey kong last night even (though on animal crossing)! It's sad that they can't get past the first level out of three. I got past those three 3 times in a row, after not playing for months. Anyhoo, I play my turbo grafx more than my xbox, so im probably not the best guy to go to for the average gamer. |

Oh snap, also should note that I've known about the ET games being buried in NEW Mexico for years, and that they discovered the site not that long ago. I even own a copy and have played it. It's terrible. I also know they made more ET carts than there were atari 2600s at the time, which seems to me like a brilliant business move. |
