I just came back from three fantastic Frank Black and the Catholics gigs in the UK, and although I really, really liked them, I gotta say the 2001 tour was better. I'm a little short in time, but the essence is, the 2001 shows were longer (30 something songs instead of 20 something), more varried, including songs from all Frank Black albums, B sides, Pixies tunes and Pixies b sides, as well as more and better covers (Comming into Los Angeles, Remake-Remodel and especially John the Revelator). It also featured radical reworking of songs (Fiddle Riddle, Gauge Away, Six Sixty Six), and as-yet-unreleased songs like Black Rider and 21 Reasons.
As much as I liked the current tour, with fantastic versions of Caribou, Veloria, I Need Peace, Velvety and Massif Central to name a few, the 2001 shows were much better. In all three shows, Frank did all of 34 songs different songs - exactly the number that he did in just one amazing and unforgettable show in the Botanique in Brussels, 8 of March 2001.

PS - and also, as much as I liked Joe Kidd, Scott kicks ass! I'm glad he returned for the Astoria gig. |

The 34 songs thing probably has something to do with Joe Kidd dont you think? |

I prefered the last shows I went to over the show I saw in 2001. It is probably because a) I didn't know the material quite as well then and b) Frank was so big I kept worrying he would keel over before our eyes. Anyway, I will see him anytime & anyplace and be happy but I hear whatchur saying. |

Gotta disagree (based on the gig's i've seen of course...)
My experience of this tour is that they were faster and tighter than I have seen 'em yet. I saw they twice in 2001, second was better than the first and though the setlist may have been a little varied back then, it suits me now that he's playing different stuff. I'm getting to hear different things now - maybe he's aiming for very little crossover between tours - i don't know - but, in my experience, my fave frank black gig will always be 'the next one'.
BTW - Joe Kidd was absolute class in Edinburgh - I don't want to bum Scott but there's a fella who knows his kit. A sure fire replacement if ever one is needed...

I've got to agree - maybe it was the shite sound quality at the Astoria gig, but for me it wasn't a patch on the 2001 show in Vancouver, or the Cult of Ray show in the Glasgow Garage.
In Vancouver they played for pretty near on 3 hours, and like you say, the set was incredible - covering the whole of Frank's career. For people like me who've been a fan of all his stuff, I thought that was ace. And when he played Gouge Away - grown men were in tears and the place nearly exploded. The best gig I've ever been to - I guess it's a hard gig to live up to.

The Cult of Ray gig at the Garage eh! I remember that - with the swirling light projection for 'The Last Stand Of Shazeb Andleeb'... |

Yeah - I can't remember much, it was way back in the day...I do remember it being very very good though. The Wannadies totally suprised me by rocking too. And the floor had a hidden step near the bar; I stepped off it and threw half my pint over myself....
