So, this has been done in a different way before, but just to get this out there since you Europeans are making me jealous...
What 5 songs (no more, no less) would/do make your night when you hear the man play them at a gig? It can be songs he's not playing lately, songs he's playing now, or anything in his catalogue. Just not covers.
For me,
1) So. Bay (since hearing Eric & Cynthia's version, I need it) 2) Man of Steel (one of my favourites that I've never heard live) 3) St. Francis/Ole Mullholland (the whole story) 4) Pray for the Girls (so I could say I heard it live :) ) 5) His Kingly Cave (Eric must be present on the organ)
OK, now Pixies tunes:
1) Gouge Away (just so much tastier with that organ) 2) Caribou (so tasty and I need to hear it - you lucky Euros) 3) Motorway to Roswell (come on, voted number one Pixies song!) 4) Velouria (see Caribou) 5) Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf with Pedal Steel)

From the flat top of my head......
Frank songs:
1) Man of Steel - same reason; it's a personal fave 2) The Man Who Was Too Loud - ditto 3) Calistan - wild steel could make this song a serious event 4) Superabound - I've got this live recording where the whole band sounds like they're just big walking smiles during this song. I'd like to see their faces while playing this tune. 5) Fields of Marigold - because it would make my mom's night (trust me, she'd be there)
Pixies tunes: 1) Debaser - because it would make everyone else's night (okay, mine too!) 2) Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons - not sure if it's my favourite song, but quite possibly my favourite vocal melody. 3) I like Dean's idea for Wave of Mutilation 4) The Happening - strikes me as a song that would be well served by an arrangement with the Catholics lineup, but what do I know? 5) Bailey's Walk - don't ask me why I love this song so much
Nothing is ever something. |

Ahhh, the Man Who Was Too Loud. That would be an awesome choice. Fields would be on there but I got to see it on the BLD/DW tour so gotta' leave the ones I've not heard. Though it might be way better to hear it now, with the whole crowd joining in on the outro/chorus. Yeah, those are all good choices, too. Well, maybe not Bailey's Walk, but.... :)

I'm prety happy with whatever they come out and play but if I could choose, and damn, this is difficult, I'd go with these right now...I'm surefive minutes from now I'll have different picks.
1--Cult of Ray (to hear those chords and the build-up) 2--Bad Wicked World (so fast, so good) 3--San Antonio, TX (one of my all-time faves) 4--1826 or Blast-off (I love long, fast songs) 5--Jesus Was Right (I'd love it if he did a little trio, John the Revelator, into the uptempo Six-Sixty-Six then pow! Right into this one)
1--Motorway 2--Alec Eiffel (with an extended ending) 3--Tony's Theme or River Euphrates 4--Planet of Sound 5--The Happening
---Like the way they've embellished on other Pixies, songs, I'd love to have them do that to these numbers. Motorway could just be this HUGE epic number to either open a show and announce, "here we are and yes, we are rock" or at the end, as the last notes chime, Frank and the boys put their guitars down and bask in the applause that picks up a few moments after the stunned silence at the sheer amazing awesomeness of Motorway to Roswell.
Arggh! This is too hard. Alternate options: Humboldt County Massacre (fast version) Man of Constant Sorrow, Le Cigar Volant, The Adventure and the Resolution.
blah blah blah |

Totally agree with comments on Roswell!
FB This old heartache (not played at the Astoria, sniff) Bad wicked world Parry the wind high low I've seen your picture Whiskey in your shoes
Pixies Motorway to Roswell No.13 Baby River Euphrates Manta Ray I've been tired
Also I know its a cover but in my Pixies dreamworld they wrote and released 'I can't Forget' the day they broke up because of indifference to their music and it went to Number 1!

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking for Motorway. That song would be awesome Catholicized. Very epic and huge.

OK, oddballish list: Tossed with lyrics (would just be SOOOO cool) Ole Mullholand (I can hear Frank, Rich, Dave and Dave singing together... makes me salivate) The Cult of Ray (one of my favourite, favourite songs) Announcement ( I would've chosen St. Francis, but I don't think it'll work well livwe... the slower songs rarely do) His Kingly Cave
Pixies would just be to difficult, and law and order is going on....

Why not? Has the song been officially "retired"? It's a shame if so... Still, he has loads of other great songs!

To everybody that's said how difficult this is... damn, you're right! Here goes... Pixies 1) Caribou 2) Levitate Me 3) Tame 4) Cactus 5) Into The White
Actually that wasn't as hard as I thought... this next one will be
Frank Black 1) All My Ghosts 2) Fu Manchu 3) Los Angeles 4) Headache 5) Manitoba
These are both totally liable to change if I was to post again in 5 minutes time! Also, I didn't know whether I could count Hang On To Your Ego, cos its a catalogue tune, right, but also a cover. I guess I would replace Fu Manchu if that counts, if not, its an unofficial no.6.

...not officially 'retired' - it's more a question of subject matter and appropriateness. |

For me,
1) End of Miles 2) Skeleton Man 3) Last Stand... 4) The Scene 5) I want Rock N Roll
OK, now Pixies tunes:
1) Gouge Away (I always want to hear this song live) 2) The Happening 3) Space (I believe in) 4) Planet of Sound 5) Tame
Talking of Speedy Marie, he played it at the Garage in London back in August 2001 (to my delight). By the way Scarla O, why do you say 'it's more a question of subject matter and appropriateness'??? (forgive my ignorance)

I read that Speedy Marie was a song dedicated to Jean Black - to quote The Frank Black Song Index:
"In the sixth track, Mr. Black's sings "I sing this romaunt". A romaunt is a romantic poem. And, sure enough, the song ends with a quite lovely, romantic poem directed to a woman. This last section is written and sung in the classic 14-line sonnet style, with a rhyme pattern of A-B-A-B, C-D-C-D, E-F-E-F, G-G. The lines are actually an acrostic; the first letter of each line spells out "JEAN MARIE WALSH,"
Shaft!

Exactly. And of course, Jean Marie Walsh being his ex-wife...
I think it's really become a sad song now, so maybe as a 14th salty tear.

Why doesn't anyone besides the cheeseman want to hear Levitate Me? |

He did that in Portland and it was awesome. At that time, BLD was not yet released, but the crowd was still singing along by the last chorus. Between that, Skeleton Man, and Harmaphroditos, I was singing FB all the next day up until he came out that night.
[EDIT] I just wanted to underscore the awesomeness of Skeleton Man live.
