And I must remedy that!
I think not getting noticed is a constant problem with bass players, they basically are in the background, but at the same time they hold it all together. Anyway, I think he is the cat pajamas.
What do y'all think?

There's really no way not to notice him. I won't get into the white man's overbite or anything, but seriously, how could you miss him? A fine bassist, but I have yet to meet him. He's the only one who I never see on stage/cleanup after the shows, so it makes him mighty difficult to talk to.
Edit- Actually, I suppose I did meet him when we went-a-knockin on their bus because Sarah hadn't put us on the guestlist. But that doesn't count because we really didn't get to talk to him, he just listened and then closed the door and grabbed Scott to help us out.

My wife loves Dave.
I like Dave, as he is the only Catholic I have an autograph from.
But my wife thinks she loves him. |

We bumbed into McDave after the show at the Metro, 10-98. He was chatting with some other folks who said they were on a FB board somewhere at the time. Being that show was the first I saw with Rich Gilbert, I ended up asking Dave where Lyle Workman was, "Off to war" he says, referring to LW's mercenary ways. How true...

Does anyone know (I am sure someone does) when exactly he joined up with Frank? He is not credited on TOTY but he's in the video for Headache, so I am wondering if Frank picked him up on the side of the road or something. |

He and Scott seemed to join Frank together. McDave and Scott's former band (Miracle Legion) toured with the Pixies and when Miracle Legion got screwed over and ultimately released their last album in 1996, they had been working simultaneously with FB on CoR at the time ... at least that's what I gathered when I talked to McDave in Louisville last March.
I can probably go further back, like McCaffrey's involvement with "What Now" in 1985 and how that connects him to Mark Mulcahy, the lead from Miracle Legion who had a different rhythm section originally but brought Scott/Dave on after the originals left.

Hey John, I just realized I was at that show with you - the kid with the girl who went onstage with Lovering. Funny, I don't remember that suit.
I do remember Dave was all over the place that night - really freaking out - I thought he was gonna knock Frank over. At one point I believe their instument nearly collided - it would have been devastating.

here is a picture i took of Dave a few years ago. I cropped it a little so it wouldn't be so huge. He looks kinda evil in this picture. I also have some pics of the other Catholics, including Feldman. They turned out good even though my camera wasn't the best.

He does look evil! But I like it. This is the Best Thread Ever! Thank y'all for humoring me.
And thank you, Chroneos, for putting that timeleine together for me. I guess I knew all that info - I just wasn't sure how it fit or something.
Sadly, I have never heard Miracle Legion. I am so outta the loop - but I have looked for CD's and never found any... |

I found a used Miracle Legion CD at a record store one time. I decided to preview it. I listened to some of the songs but wasn't impressed enough to buy it. I don't even remember which album it was.

That was actually ML on Pete & Pete, called themselves Polaris, though.

You are funny! And you have his germs, lucky girl.
Oh, and THE HAT. What do we think about this? It is like his new trademark - he reminds me of that guy on Fat Albert with the hat over his eyes. I can't decide what it is about and I kept wishing he would take it off but then when he did his hair was all matted to his head and I thought "put it back on!" |

Polaris was the band featuring Mark Mulcahy who did the theme song from Pete and Pete, I don't know whether it was a real band or not, I think it may have been created for the show. They are seen in the opening credits, but I can't remember whether that's Scott & Dave with him. The band appeared within at least one episode too, doing the younger pete's favorite song, which went "I was arrouuund...nobody knows nobody knows"...anyway at the last Frank Black show in 1998, Mark Mulcahy did an solo set as opener, and Scott and Dave joined him for the last few songs, and they closed with the Pete and Pete theme song, it was great.

from the pete and pete faq - so that's how Scott became "Harris":
4.1. Who did the music for Pete and Pete
This is the second most asked question that we receive. Numerous bands contributed to the show, but the house band, the band that played the music for the opening credits, provided many other songs for the show and is the one everybody wants to know about is Polaris. Will McRobb was a big fan of Connecticut band Miracle Legion and asked if they'd score the show. They did, but as they were missing a band member they changed their name to Polaris. The three members even gave themselves screen names, becoming Jersey (bass), Muggy (Guitar and vocals) and Harriss (drums).
4.2. Is there a Pete and Pete CD?
Originally, a three track tape was given away in a Kelloggs promotion while the show was still running and it became a Holy Grail for fans of the show. Then, after a long period of intense rumour and anticipation, Polaris released a CD entitled "Music from the Adventures of Pete and Pete" in 1999, four years after the show ended when all copyright questions had been answered. It was released on Muggy's own label, the Mezzotint imprint, and is available from there. It contains all the tracks you know and love and no self respecting Pete and Pete/music fan should be without it.
4.3. Are Polaris or Miracle Legion still togethor?
Unfortunately not. Miracle Legion released their last CD, "Portrait of a Damaged Family" in 1996. Their most successful album was 1992's Drenched. Polaris only released the one album and never toured as under their stage name. Mark Mulcahy is now a solo artist (with two albums out at the time of writing) and the other two members, Dave McCaffrey (Jersey) and Scott Boutier (Harriss) have joined Frank Black (formerly leader of one of the world's most inspirational bands The Pixies) and are now part of his band; Frank Black and the Catholics.

Oh, info! I love it. And possible news for the FAQ or BIOS. Sarah, where you at?
I knew that was where "Harris" came from - but I wonder where McDave got "Jersey". Is he from the great state? A new mystery! |

The real question is, do we have a Jersey on the forum now? Maybe he's been posting incognito. :)
I'll have to look it up.
