I seem to be on my own in thinking this, but the gig at the Astoria was badly let down by crap sound - I couldn't even make out what half the songs were until half way through them - everything just sounded like "BDDWWWW BBBDWWWDDDWWWWWW BBBWWWBBWWWWDDDWWWWWW"
And they only played for an hour and 20 mins.
I wouldn't make a fuss but the last time I saw them (in Vancouver) they played for 3 hours and the sound quality was so good you could actually tell what the songs were AND make out individual instruments. Which is important with a band like the Catholics who have quite an intricate, many layered sound with all that pedal steel etc.

Maybe it was where you were standing? We stood on the left stage somewhere and did not get to hear Davey P at all... which really sucked for songs like Bullet.

I thought it sounded pretty good - except for during The Snake which I couldn't identify until a 3rd of the way through. |

Wasn't too bad by right speakers. Everyone's deaf after Serafin anyway. |

i thought the vocals were really low in the mix for the majority of the set, which was a bit disappointing...... i was on the left side of the stage and apart from that it sounded fine...sure franks guitar was a little high, but thats ok....the drums sounded fantastic tho. |

i would second what others said earlier...If your cruising this board, your probably a big fan, which means you want to stand right at front. bad end of this deal is that is always where the sound is the worst, you are probably hearing more stage monitors than anything else and thats why things sound off. The sound is usually mixed for dead center about 30-40 feet out from stage. Just a thought |

I was stood as far left as it was possible to be, right next to the speaker stack. As a result I'm still regaining the use of that ear! It wasn't an overly great mix though from where I was standing. Still, stood there enabled me to get a good view of Dancing Boy Rich, a genuine superstar. You'd think no-one would make high kicks cool after Hank Marvin, but I stand corrected. The main problem for me was I was stood by the gate where the punk crowdsurfers were forcibly ejected, so I was constantly having to make way for these greasy adolescents. The scum. You'd think someone with enough sense to come to watch Frank Black & The Catholics would want to enjoy the music...

Actually, I thought the Astoria gig had the best sound of all the FB gigs I've seen in this tour. |

I thought the sound was brilliant, every thing was clear. I was standing directly in front of frank about 6 rows back. But when velouria started the place went fucking crazy.

I deliberately stood by the mixing decks for this gig, as I thought the balance had gone mushy at the Brighton gig the night before, (at Brighton I had been about 6 rows back in the centre). In general the sound was better than the sound at Brighton but there were several numbers where there was a lot of booming on the bass which then made the vocals difficult to hear. I am not sure whether they just had the bass cranked up too high or if it was a particular configuration of instruments that were causing it, but it certainly varied from song to song. |

Seems to depend on where you stand - Hmm. You'd think I would have learnt this after being deafened at Motorhead in 1982!
I was at stage right at frontish and though the sound was rough. There was a stack right next to us and my ears are pretty worn out - so I put it down to that.
Enjoyed it loads all the same. |

We went upstairs to the balcony coz we thought the sound would be better - didn't seem to make much difference. It was still ace to see the Catholics doing their thing though.
Maybe I'm just getting old....
