Frank Black Does Toronto Right

As a little treat for his diehard Toronto fans, singer-songwriter/guy-who-can’t-escape-the-Pixies-shadow Frank Black is celebrating both the start of his North American tour and the release of his two simultaneous albums, Devil’s Workshop and Black Letter Days, with us lucky Canucks. How does he intend to do this? How does five straight days of shows in one of the city’s most intimate clubs, The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern grab you? For Black, the decision to kick things off here was a simple one, ‘cause we just seem to love him so darned much.

"I wanted to start my tour in Toronto, because I enjoy the reaction of people up there," says Black from his home in Los Angeles. Taking time out from building an "escape-proof kennel [that] my dog has proven [is] not escape-proof," Black admits that Toronto has always been rather kind to him. So he’d like to return the favour. But in his typical uh, frank humour (pardon the pun), he jokes that "most importantly, I think we can pull it off. There might be enough people interested to make five shows worthwhile. I couldn’t do that just anywhere, you know."

Receiving heaps of flack for his decision to pull a Guns N’ Roses kinda stunt and put out two albums separately but at the same time, Black grunts that it’s not about ego or artistic eccentricity. It’s about consideration.

"Devil’s Workshop and Black Letter Days were both recorded live in one session," he says. "They were two different session, two different line-ups and two different producers. Out of deference to those configurations, I wanted to keep ‘em separate. It’s respect to these people and their hard efforts."

Still, why release them both right now? Why not stagger them… wait to see how one is received, then move on when the time is right instead of putting all of your eggs in one basket?

"What else do I have to do?" Black asks bluntly. "All I’ve got is makin’ records, so I do it! We’re already working on another album with a totally different vibe: a piecemeal record done over several sessions, where these albums were one session each... the bands I hold in super-high esteem generally used to just crank ‘em out. It may be a bit cocky perhaps. Some people see it that way. My critics will probably think I’m a little self-indulgent, but…"

Frank Black’s Toronto engagement at the Horseshoe runs from tonight (October 29) until Saturday, November 2.

it's bizarre, isn't it -that you are considered self-indulgent if you crank lots of records out, yet to hire eighty producers, record in twenty studios in every continent - release the album of 10 tracks after a five year gap smacks of artistic integrity? Poor Frank
