A really cool show!, Frank wasnt too talkative, introduced the band and thats about it. Chatted to rich and dave afterwards, quite a quiet setlist, didnt play freedom rock or i want to R&R, Billy radcliff was superb. Crowd was a bit square to be honest!

great show indeed, billy radcliffe, robert onion and massif centrale highlights. missed not having hermaphroditos, and i thought the support serafin were terrible, uncomfortably loud too. dunno why all the fuss generally about the lack of talk, i thought it came over as a 'we're a professional road-hardened rock band doing a job' kinda attitude, and that worked for me |

Bit of a legend???
By Joe Beasley
Serafin face stiff opposition in the guise of die hard Frank Black followers.
Serafin in support No one really pays any attention to this entertaining four piece, which is unfortunate, because I enjoyed them immensely. Think decent-era placebo with more anger and more front.
Material from the new album 'No Push Collide' impresses, none more so than the delight which is 'Build High, Tear Low', possibly the highlight of the night for me. They deserved better from the crowd, but in the end it'll be the distant on lookers who kick themselves when they realise what they missed.
There is an air of excitement prior to Mr Black's arrival on stage. Clearly the cult following of The Pixies has followed this solo turn, and when he waddles out of the darkness the place erupts.
It would seem he has no time for chatter as he and his band play song after song without a word of any sort to the Oxford masses. Personally I like to feel like part of the gig, but tonight I was definitely an outsider.
For me the star of Frankie's set was his lead guitarist (Rich Gilbert), with long bleached hair, thick black rimmed glasses and a cowboy style shirt he played solos as if he had 10 fingers on each hand. Facial expressions amused and epic plucking dazzled, I'm casting my vote for Rich Gilbert and The Catholics to tour!
Frank's set comprises of a wide cross section of styles, from country to blues, Pixies-era rock to middle of the road folk... He's certainly talented, after all he fronted a great, great band! The highlight of his set was indeed a Pixies song was the highlight of his set, as a superb rendition of 'Caribou' was greeted with much elation and over excited dancing (or shaking) from the devoted Frank-followers.
I can't help thinking, that to really enjoy his live performance you have to be a real fan of the man. I went with an open mind, and I definitely enjoyed parts of the set, but my thoughts wondered and at times I couldn't help but think I'd much rather be somewhere else.
If you are a fan of Mr Black, then you will love his relentless plod through his entire back-catalogue, otherwise, I'm not so sure. Though yes, i appreciate this was a good performance by a bit of a legend.

Amazing concert! I've seen three in a row and this was the best. Stood at the end in the beginning, but I just HAD to get to the front, and during the craziness of Veloria. Fantastic gig. Freedom Rock was just amazing, I loved hearing it.
The crowd on front was really into it, I screamed along with quite a few people. Dozens of people crowd surfed (a first in Frank Black gigs for me), and then they were escorted out. I stood right behind a tall guy in a green t-shirt, and behind me another guy kept trying to reach his girlfriend? and was annoying, but other then that, fantastic :-)
Oh, I'm probably behind, but what's the song Frank covered in the end? He closed the other two concerts I saw (Oxford and Cambridge) with the same song.

I think the last song he played was Fare Thee Well, if it was the same song that closed the Cambridge gig that is. I didn't recognise it either but whoever put the setlist up for the gig (peter walker??) has it down as that....
The Oxford gig sounds a it crazy though...crowd surfing?? I thought Cambridge was bad enough, people moshing and pushing each other around to Caribou???? Strange..... |
