I heard a national puplic radio story yesterday about a country musician called Robert Earle Keane (Keene?) and the stuff this guy and his band puts out his right up the current Catholics sound alley. I don't follow country enough to know who's who or what although recently i read that most are not full fledged bands like the catholics in that they sculpt a sound in the studio with crack musicians and hire a seperate touring band etc. since following the career of FB into this phase i can't say that i have heard any country bands that have the same crack guitar sounds and energy but the samples i heard from REK on the radio were pretty kick ass.
the songs were more on the creative bent also as you expect from FB&C, REK himself sounded in interview to be pretty well read and humorous.
the band was tight and rockin' and they definitely sound like a real deal -new album is called something like: 'farm fresh onions'.
-anybody know more or heard this artist before?

Yeah, I'm a big Robert Earl Keen fan. I'm not a huge country fan. My favorite bands are Frank Black, the Pixies, Bosstones, Clash, etc., but I really like Robert Earl Keen. His live shows are amazing. I live in Boston, so I don't get to see him much, but he's always touring somwehere. In fact, he's got a couple of shows in New York next month.
My favorite album is Bigger Piece of Sky, but I would recommend Live No. 2 Dinner to a newbie. Because it's a live album (where he is at his best) it's a good overview of his career. The version of Road Goes on Forever is worth the price of admission alone.
Check him out. It's not country/Nashville industry crap. It's just good songwriting |

Toss me in the mix as a big REK fan as well. My first love in music is FB & the C's, but I also like some of the "pseudo-country" artists like REK, John Prine and Steve Earle. I've seen REK in concert almost ten times, and it's a lively show with a great sound. I also suggest checking out No. 2 Live Dinner or No Kinda Dancer. I can't believe I ever saw him discussed on a Frank Black board! |

hmmm, it's kinda like that tootsie pop commercial: how many licks...crunch ..three three REK fans amongst the FBnetters -oh well that quantifies it i guess.
