I've been wanting to work at Best Buy for like, 4 years. Not actively dreaming about it, but it's always been the kinda place I'd like to work. Yeah, maybe I'm crazy, but I enjoy talking to customers about things I enjoy, mainly computers. Best Buy had a job fair on Tuesday and I attended. When I first got there, I had to fill out a basic form and I waited while the lady went to check to see if I filled out the online application...I heard a very familiar guitar riff in the background. It was none other than "Massif Centrale"...what are the chances!? I felt "that's the sign, man" and it sure was. I got hired as a computer sales guy. Score. Part time though, but I'll work my way towards fulltime hopefully.

Congratulations man. The world needs as many people like you as possible, that is people who actually enjoy retail. I was the assistant manager of an American Greetings this past summer and I really loath retail, it's all I've ever done - shoot me. But seriously, glad you got the job.
As an aside, I know this kid who graduated last year and I ran into him the other day. Sort of simultaneously I asked him what his major had been and if he was working. He said "philosophy, I start at Best Buy on Mon." I paused for a moment then errupted in laughter. Luckily he wasn't offended, actually he thought it was funny too. Philosophy, while fun, gets you nowhere.

I'll let you know in a month if I feel the same way :) I worked at CompUSA for a year and a half and I enjoyed it for the most part...the part that I enjoyed was, like I said, talking to the customers about computer stuff, and working with people who were big computer nerds like me. I had a lot of fun times. I just hope I don't have a ton of pressure and bullshit to deal with from company standards and such, you know? Like "you need to sell this this and this much or else..." cause that's when it gets annoying.

yeah I sorta had those company standards, it was all bullshit. Like I said I hope you're very happy there - you're the kind of worker everyone loves. btw, I'm coming to you for every computer problem I have from now on and I expect you'll answer me with a smile!

Jim, weird, because I just got a job at Best Buy too. I guess all Best Buys have that job fair around the same time. I applied a month ago though, but they told me to come in during the job fair. I wanted to work in the CD section but they are putting me in customer service/register or something. Which is cool.. I mean it's Best Buy either way (discounts). They said they can cross-train me to work in media, so hopefully a position will open up because it would be awesome to talk to people about music and be like "no no, don't buy Christina Aguiliera, get a Frank Black CD."

When Best Buy made its recent explosion into my local market, their big thing was that the sales reps don't work on commission. I don't know if this is a half-truth to make the customers comfortable, because people I know that work there get commission if their sales are extremely high, but I don't see how the company can really demand figures from the sales folk if the no-commission thing is that transparent. Apparently the people working there just selling CDs make $18 an hour, which is pretty good around these parts. Maybe that's how they ensure quotas; they know people would kill to fill these positions so the workers aren't valued (not to discourage you or anything). Maybe it's also different in the States and my point just mootified itself, I don't know.

Derek, yeah the entire company had their jobfair on October 7th. Congrats on the job...at least you got your foot in the door and can move into other departments more easily. The sales job is definitely non-commission. The hardware manager said that since it's non-commission, it's tends to be a more laid back selling environment, but we still need to push the warranties and shit. I tend to sell with honesty, and I sure as hell don't like to bullshit or lie to people. I want the customer to trust me and not think I'm some sleezy salesguy. We'll see how well that works out.

Freaking weird...
I had my first orientation meeting tonight at Best Buy. It was in this little room near the front, and it was mostly watching videos and listening to this guy talk. Well, after one video, he started talking and outside the room I hear the solo to Massif Centrale! I couldn't believe it. Especially because of Jim's story. I was right next to the door and I wanted to open it to listen to the rest of the song. I could barely hear it and if it wasn't for the solo I wouldn't have.

Derek, how are you liking it so far? I had orientation Saturday and Sunday and I started my first day on the floor today. I think I'm really gonna dig it there, unless they like threaten my life to sell the fuckin PSPs. I guess they have the same "sample CD" or something for every Best Buy, cause I heard Massif Centrale twice today...there was a Television song on also, but I can't remember which one. Cool stuff man.
