Hi

Can anyone help me with this one?

I have just bought the reissued cd albums Doolittle, Trompe le Monde and Bossanova from the American website CD Universe. The only reason for buying these was to replace the old versions already in my collection. However the cat. no. and artwork appears to be unchanged and I cannot make out any difference in the playback. I have queried this with CD Universe but they are standing by the fact that they are remastered cd's.

Am I being done up like a kipper or am I going mad?

I await your learned opinions.

From what I have gathered from previous discussions on the matter here, these re-released CDs are in fact NOT remastered. So you might have a bone to pick w/ CD Universe

yes, they're definitely not remastered. The only difference is the artwork. The only reason they were re-released the way they were is because 4ad got the rights (after not having them for 10 years) from Elektra. So it was a general repromotion to get the 4ad stock back out there.

If CD Universe are saying they're remastered, direct them to 4ad.com - the link here is vague, but they're not.

there's also a thread on the 4ad forum about it

the only remastered cd is the b-sides, which has always been this way.

Thanks for the very informative response. I shall take it up with Cd Universe and go back to listening to my original cds. Not that there was anything wrong with them in the first place!

Great website by the way. I'll try to visit on a regular basis from now on.

how could you lose the rights of the pixies!

(there is a good reason behind it, isn't it?)

Jo, how is the artwork different? I haven't been to a shop since SMYT came out.

4ad never had the rights in the US - everywhere else in the world the band are signed to 4ad direct, but Elektra has always released Pixies albums in the US, up until 10 years after the last record (plus an amount of sell-off time).

It was pretty normal to sign to a major back then, and keep indie overseas (see The Strokes at the moment, who are doing the same thing).

Elektra did keep the rights to The Breeders, so currently all Breeders records (no singles though) come out on Elektra in the US and 4ad everywhere else.

A quick update. CD Universe have given me a refund/store credit for the returned cds and are 'looking into' the subject of remastering with their distributors. Let's hope that they change their website. Just had a look and no change as yet though.
