| Anyone know what Frank sings in that 'middle' bit that's on the purple tape? Sounds a bit like 'unbroke hearts, we love many...' but I'm not sure? |

I'm still a little unsure about that one. Now what the heck is the last verse? |

I thought it was the exact same thing but with "hearts" instead of "parts"... meh, you might be right, of course |

Yeah, he was the one suggesting they'd cut that part out of the Surfer Rosa version, right? I think Charles said something about it on one of my bootlegs, where he plays a solo show... |

I always thought the middle part was about All the horses and I don't mean the Bob Dylan song
''it's not a box, it's a submarine'' |

Horses?
I'll dig up one of those solo versions as they make a lot of the lyrics really obvious... 99% sure it's "all broke parts".
The last verse will never be 'got', I don't think... "Before I died/I took [......]/And packed it up, up, up/To Arizona". Don't anyone dare say 'took my Honda'.

On a related note, in all the lyrics I've seen for the song it says, "She went up stairs and cut her hair." I swear it says, "She went up stairs, and shot her head."
Am I just nuts?

The day before/That I was wed/She went upstairs/And shot her head/I'm amazed/And when I was/A little boy/A ball of string/My favorite toy/I'm amazed/All broke parts/We'll all mend all broke parts/Before I died/I took [my?] [mona??]/And packed it up, up, up/To Arizona/I'm amazed.
Where on earth do people get this 'Honda' and, really weirdly, 'too bad it ain't got no brakes' stuff from?!
Gah... I'll have to post a link to the solo version again, as the above lyrics are very clear in it. A lot of the Surfer Rosa words are slurred or mis-pronounced while growling/screeching, etc.
Grrrrrr... rrrggghhhhh... etc... said the anal-retentive Pixies lyrics obsessive.

I always thought it was "Before I died, I took my puta..."
Puta = whore en espanol
I always liked that image. Now I see Frank checking the oil on his beat-up, paint cracked Civic. Damn.

Digging up this old thread, I'm now convinced it's 'all broke hearts'. I had 'parts' stuck in my head from long before I ever heard the unedited version, from reading the ancient 'Rock A My Soul' fanzine which described the then-mysterious Purple Tape!

well as part of my extensive research for the pixies cover i'm doing, i listened to the acoustic demo version quite a bit, and i'm now quite sure it's "low broke hearts, we love many" - at least on the original acoustic 4ad demo thing... i could be wrong though.

Yep, Modest Mouse rule, I hear they're working on a new album but the drummer might have quit or atleast his position in the band is unsure for now and they've recruited a new drummer. |

this reminds me of an argument my friends and i had back in high school about Cactus. and whether he was saying "sittin' here wishin' on the cement floor".. or " sittin' here wishin' on the semen flow"
i think the way he says it, it's meant to be a double entendre. and i think he switches it up sometimes.. |

Get hold of some of the solo Black Francis shows -- the lyrics are mostly very clear indeed. It's "A ball of string/My favorite toy" and "All broke hearts/We'll all mend all broke hearts" for sure.

a ball of string though?? i mean, we're not talking about a kitten here.
i'm still going with "my father stringed" (even though it's not grammatically correct) |

It is a ball of string! He's saying he was a bit odd/deprived (at least, the song's protagonist is)... if I remember, I'll upload a very clear clip from the 'Golden Ticket' edition (or just dig it up from SoulSeek/Kazaa or whatever)...

Floop, since when have Pixies/FB ever had to make sense in a logical manner?
If anything, Pixies lyrics are more likely to be abstract than "realistic". Not that a kid playing with a ball of string is abstract anyway, but surely you can't claim that "my father stringed" is more likely to be it because it's more logical.

yes, i know that pixies songs are abstract and surreal.. i think it's "my father stringed" simply because that's what it sounds like. to me.
it sounds more cool too. i mean, a ball of string? "my father stringed my favorite toy" is a better written line than, "a ball of string / my favorite toy," in my opinion anyway.
but yeah, with some of those lyrics, it's anyone's guess what they really are. i could be wrong.
i do think it's interesting what different people hear. |

The lyrics I read somewhere said "Sittin' here wishin' on the scenery floor", which makes even less sense. I think it was probably cement floor, cos the protagonist is in prison, but it probably doesn't even matter.
