I like the country-influenced songs by Frank Black, like "My favourite kiss", "This Old Heartache", "Coastline", "Chip Away Boy" and "Jet Black River". I wonder what kind of music style these songs are exactly. Nowadays almost every kind of music has its own category, e.g. "Piedmont Blues" or "Country-Folk". I think this music can not be called country, but also not Rock n' Roll. Is it "Alternative Country" ? What do you think ?

my "local" (70 miles away) indie music shop where i buy all my frank releases have an "Alternative country" section. I haven't ever looked there, but Frank Black and the C's aren't listed under "ROCK" there. I really dont know where the older albums are filed, because I buy them all while they are still on the "NEW RELEASES" wall. Next time i'll check .. lol.

I wouldn't call "This Old Heartache" a country song...I wouldn't really call any of them country...the most country they get on the new album would be, in my opinion, Horrible Day...but I'd still classify that more as honkey tonk than country. If anything, it would be alt country, but there's still a big chunk of country missing (i.e. his vocal style is nowhere near it)...it's a more R&B, rockabilly, honkey tonk kinda sound.

Goodbye Lorraine is probably my vote for most straight up country. But the rest, I agree, I wouldn't classify as country (at least not in the strictest sense).

When I hear Frank Black without his band, I can only classify it under songwriter/composer. The same category John Lennon and the guy from Oingo Boingo. You see this when you attempt to analyze the music and tab.
It seems like the rest of the band members turn the music into the country-folk sound, al though I'm sure Frank had a general idea what the music should sound like.
I'm also thinking Frank's sound is pliable: Frank + influences of new bass player + influences of drummer + influences of additional members = new sound. It’s not a bad thing. It’s a great way to explore the limitless depths of music.

'americana': just likt alt. country or trip hop or intelligent dance music or electro (black letter days might be called 'country blues', i think it's a sadder LP than the new one)a lot of these are made up to quantify a trend. hell, some places just put frank & co. in the old pixies slots..

i like the way their(fb&cs) pedal steel guitar is more sprightly than the usual country drawly sound it brings. and anyways, a lot of 'indie' bands use pedal steel nowadays.

A couple of weeks ago the music mag I read gave a review of SMYT, a pretty bad one, saying basically "it sucks, you can almost hear Frank's cowboy boots on Goodbye Lorraine", and then on the next page there was a long article mourning the death of Johnny Cash. I mean, what's the difference between Cash playing country music and Frank playing it? That's stupid.

Johnny Cash didn't used to be in the pixies
People can't accept that their Indie-rock hero shifts his music style
Well screw them

This new album is definitely influenced by something stronger than Frank Black himself. The previous albums are full of beats grouped in sixes, stranger chord progressions, and explore the uncharted territory. I call it the Frank Black style; the original thing that attracted me to the Pixies and the first sounds of Frank Black.
Show Me Your Tears is friendlier, but that’s okay with me. I don’t mind if he takes certain styles for a test drive. It’s fun to look back on artist’s music career, seeing the paths from point A to point B to point C.
I still think the album should have been called “Show Me You’r(e) Nuts.”

I bet he would have done a kickass, mournful rendition of Caribou, but he couldn't pull off something like Crackity Jones. |
