I realize this is a Frank Black board, but it seems like it needs a section in which people can talk about what a pretentious, overblown, masturbatory (thanks Frank), annoying, seagull-sounding-liking dookie head, Sting is. Like how Norm Macdonald on Weekend Update always found a way to illustrate his many "theories" (like "Germans love David Hasselhoff" and "OJ is guilty") during his report. So my theory is that Sting is a Jaguar-commercial-makin' cyst on popular music's chode.
Any other ideas on this guy?
Oh and did you guys catch the article on Audiogalaxy a while ago with similar subject matter? It was really good.

he does seem to be a serious whore lately.. i'm not crazy about the guy, but The Police were pretty cool.. i gots me a copy of Reggatta de Blanc on vinyl.
i remember that whole "Sting; Compaq U.S. Tour" thing a while back and thought it was pretty disgusting.. i think it's especially lame when people get corporate sponsorships from companies that have absolutely nothing to do with what they're selling. like, The Anaheim Angels Stadium used to be called "Angel's Stadium".. (what else?). But now it'd Edison Field, since GE bought it.. or like The Staples Center.. what the fuck??? it's so stupid. why didn't they at least get like Nike or ESPN or something like that? it's still equally shitty, but at least it would make more sense... fuck it. |

Saying that Sting is no where near as much a tosser as someone like Liam Gallagher (Oasis frontman), or Robbie Williams... now they are complete arseholes, whose talets are that they can perform (well Robbie Williams can unfortunately, whilst Liam Gallagher is only famous because he's a toothless Manc twat who swears alot and relies on the talent of his older brother Noel, who is also a prick)
Apologies for my language, but British music is filled with arrogant fuckwits these days. |

God, I detest Sting. Do you remember when he was trying to save rain forest tribes threatened by deforestation/development? A noble cause - but think of the poor people whose entire way of life was threatened, and who do they get as a saviour? Sting! Fucking hell, you know you are doomed then. |

This thread deserves to be resurrected. But, Mr Dietzel, I have a terrible confession to make. I have been listening to the new Johnny Cash album 'The Man Comes Around.' It is a bit mixed, his cover of Lennon's 'In My Life' arguably doesn't work - but there are many other excellent tracks (including songs by Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode and Ewen MacColl!!). One of them, 'I Hung My Head', was not a song I was familiar with. It is by STING!!!!!!! And I like it! What advice could you give me? I've been suffering.... |

For those of you who have heard the new Johnny Cash album...what do you think about it? I am starting to wonder if Rick Rubin or Johnny Cash is calling the shots. Interesting covers, good musicianship...but is commercialism rearing its ugly head a little too much?

Yeah. I checked it out at Barnes & Noble, and was mostly disappointed. I own the first three, but will not be buying this one. The first two rocked my world. The third one started getting kinda cheeseball. Plus the packaging became less cool. No more hand-written note paper memoirs and all that.
Maybe I was blinded because around the time of "Unchained" being released (aka: American II) I started really digging Rubin's record company, it having also released Frank's post-TotY record. Could it be something like the "curse of the Bambino"? Like after ditching Frank, American Recordings lost its edge? Frank does somewhat resemble "the Babe" or at least "a babe."
From the get-go words like "exploitation" a la Sinatra's "Duets" were entering conversations about the Rick Rubin/Johnny Cash union. But man the first two came really classy for me. Some well chosen covers and some fine originals. But I see this francise taking a more abrupt dive in the future. Don Henley & Fiona Apple?
It seems only a release or two away from incorporating a few Andrew Lloyd Webber numbers, maybe a duet with P Diddy, and a cover of NKotB's "Please Don't Go Girl." I've heard the word "kitsch" used before, and I seriously don't know what it means, but I believe it has come up in similar contexts to this one.
But Ten Percenter: Dun worry. I think JC has illustrated that he could do a cover of a mosquito buzzing by your ear and have it come across as deeply soothing. Now, does Sting actually participate in the recording? Then I would say it's time to check your head.

I have been assured that Sting does not participate in the recording - scant consolation at the moment. I would give the album another try - although it is not as good as the first two in the series. When I saw the track listing I was slightly appalled - Danny Boy? We'll meet again? But the version of We'll Meet Again is oddly compelling and moving - you can sense JRC saying his goodbyes. At least until the next in the series. Incidentally, Erik and John - have you heard the tribute album 'Kindred Spirits'? Steve Earle wins with his version of 'Hardin wouldn't run' in my opinion |

I have to profess a small liking for The Police.
Sting however disappeared up his own choccy whiz way a very long time ago - and is the most insufferable prick I can think of!

Some of this is true, I think compared to the music of the Police Sting's solo stuff has lost an important edge. The Police had a creativity and an edge that was absolutely amazing. I think they're one of the great bands of rock history. As for Sting's solo stuff, it started out ok, you know not bad, but it's sorta lost an edge. I don't really care for him playing a concert for the release of Windows XP (last year (2001) was it?) But again at least he's trying to make good use and charity of his wealth. Fender has also issued a "Sting" bass recently (it's actually no more than a remake of a '55 P-Bass). Honestly I don't care for that much seeing as it was the old school Fender P-Bass long before Sting used it. I admit I'm getting one for Christmas, but only because I love the old style Fender Basses. I think on the whole Sting is a great musician and bass player and all that, but he was much better with the Police (Summers and Copeland added a creativity to the mix that he can't duplicate by himself all alone).

You know, Baz, Sting himself is reputed to be a pretty malodorous fellow. I vaguely remember Conan O'Brien complaining of Sting's b.o., poking fun at his diet, and saying that a distinctly "all natural" smell permeated the backstage bathroom long after Sting took a dump there. So yer right on track there. |
