I like them a lot. Theyre one of my favorite bands.

I dont like Zwan at all. I hope the pumpkins will play again and i want DArcy to be the bassist again and not Melissa Auf der Maur.
Dont get me wrong, i like Melissa but i will always prefer DArcy.

Yeah, i thought the Pumpkins were cool. Never listened to the last album (Machina?) but very familiar with most everything before. Dependably solid tunes for sure.

I think you're right. Theres too much ego among members of the Pumpkins especially with Billy Corgan. So having a Pumpkins reunion is almost impossible.

I like 'em, used to love 'em. I think the first two albums of theirs stand out as being more ethereal and less pretentious than the others. Can't say that they made a bad album, though. "Geek USA" still kicks my ass.

I pretty much hate them. Sorry.

gish is kind of imature, siamese dream is one of the best 90's albums (when it cme out back in 93 it was the only thing i listened to for 6 months along with the breeders' last splash)and mellon collie is great too.i liked a couple of songs in adore and after that i lost interest in them.never listened to machina.corgan is a megalomaniac and zwan suck but i must admit that he did write some great songs...

Adore sucked ass. Machina was okay, since they got their drummer back, and not that stupid-ass drum machine they used for awhile.

Gish is my favorite Pumpkins album. Siamese Dream is probably more musically mature, but I prefer Gish for some reason. I do love Siamese Dream, though.

I don't know why Corgan and the former Pumpkins can't understand that the best they ever sounded was the era of 1990-1993. I'm not saying they had to remake those same albums, but I would think even they could tell how far their music regressed after Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

i can't stop thinking that a new Pixies album would sound more or less like "adore".

pumpkins are dead and now so is zwan.

billy's solo album should be out next year.

anybody who hates adore is closed minded. anybody who only likes the first two albums is too pretentious themselves.

Ebb, on the same token, anybody who tries to insult someone for having an opinion is an asshole. Like what you like. Don't like what you don't. Fucking quit trying to piss people off. You don't know the real personalities of anyone on this forum, so how can you claim that someone is being pretentious and close-minded when they don't like the same album as you? That's a pretty limited basis for a judgement like that.

Besides, I liked Machina. I liked Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. I liked Pisces Iscariot. I liked many of their singles from "the Aeroplane Flies High." I like the demo from 1988 of them that I have. Who said they only liked the first two?

'88 demos - good, very promising. I have them on mp3...the only thing that really bothers me is the sound quality. There's a great psychedelic tinge to a lot of the songs

Gish - great album, strong songs...I can see being a little "immature" though, in the larger scope of things. But it still rules

Siamese Dream - also a great album. 'Spaceboy' annoys the living crap out of me though, I skip it every time. 'Geek USA' is fucking brilliant, as is 'Soma.' 'Mayonaise' is a great song too.

Pisces Iscariot - aruably my favorite SP album (even though its a collection of B-sides). I found this album highly inspirational for a very long time.

Mellon Collie - could have been a really really solid single-disc album, as opposed to a mish-mashed double-disc. I prefer a lot of the heavier fare on it to the lighter songs.....
which leads me to the conclusion that the songs I didn't like on Mellon Collie are what turned me off to all the subsequent Pumpkins albums. never got into Adore or Machina, actually heard some of each and found them to be complete crap.

Old-school Pumpkins stuff is awesome, definitely included in my own personal rock canon. Too bad they lost their original sound. And then started sucking horrid ass.

Ebb- you are a judgmental asshole. Tastes vary, learn to deal with it.

All the SP albums are suberb.

I think that making Adore after Mellon Collie was a very brave thing to do, he could have just made the same album again and again, made loads of money and kept the general public, (and his record label,) happy. Instead he was true to himself and his own artistic leanings.

Going back to the orginal post i understand the sentiment, i love the Smashing Pumpkins too but i don't think that there is any chance of them getting back together. I think there were alot of problems between D'arcy and Billy at the end.

Did you see that documentry that was on TV about 2 years ago? Billy seemed pretty bitter that D'arcy left and didn't see out the last tour.

Anyway, all is not lost and Billy Corgan should deliver some amazing solo work at some point in the near future.

bah I really doubt Corgan will find anyone to put up with his ego again. I can't believe he's actually publishing his poetry, he's ran out of creativity so long ago *sigh* call it quits and take a rest

Like i said on my last post, there's too much ego among the pumpkins members.

There's no way that someone will actually like Billy's attitude. Look what happened to Zwan. No wonder why Paz and Dave left the band.

About Billy doing this poetry stuff. Well i like the way Billy writes his lyrics. But his writings works best with a music playing with it. Sure Billy writes beautiful lyrics, but him doing this poetry thing is kinda lame. I think Billy should just make music, thats it.

Re Zwan - It was really sad to me to see such a great, nice and talented guy as Dave Pajo get smothered by Billy Corgan's musical "fist" - I had remembered reading an interview with all of them where they had mentioned having been friends for around ten years and always thinking it would be great to start some kind of "super band" and make classic-style rockers. It seems like Corgan is stuck in a rut more than anything - I worked at a frame shop in Chicago years ago and one of my coworkers was really good friends with him - she said he actally was a very nice, self-effacing and almost shy person - I'm having a hard time making the two personalities reconcile. Maybe he just overcompensates? I really loved SP's early stuff, but after a while I just got tired of their sound.

hahah defensive much? yes opinions vary, you think you have good taste in music, i think you've got your head inserted into your poop chute.

apl4eris: re zwan/billy.

actually he knew matt sweeny for like ten years, the both of them met dave pajo later on. i'm not really clear on when, but it was some time after they had decided they wanted to do a band together after the pumpkins ended.

regarding billy; the two personality types are not mutually exclusive. i myself can be very self-deprecating, personable, kind, but when i know i'm right i will crush all opposing opinions.

back to the general thread topic:

the people who say billy should do gish and/or siamese dream over and over are the same assholes who think frank should never have ended the pixies. to them i say, drop dead.

Ok, so should I die with a slight twitch in the leg way, tounge hanging out, B-movie style, or in the Oscar-winning, prolonged, I love you Bess, take care of the dogs way? Hehe. J/k. I actually enjoyed all SPs - Zwan, though I don't own all of the albums, and have not downloaded/stolen the rest off the internet. My favorite, and call me an asshole, or whatever's cool, but my fav SP album is Mellon Collie disc 2.

Ebb, I hate you.

Zwan in my opinion sucked. Adore sucked. That is my opinion. If you don't agree, or just want to call me names, please don't reply. Because, really, I do hate you. But I like the forum. I don't want to play the internet head-butting game with you or anyone else. I'm not going to call you any names, as you seem to be so fond of doing. You do say things to intentionally piss people off, and for that reason I hate you. Whatever wise-ass response you have, I don't care to hear it.

that reply was totally useless because i don't care if you like me or hate me. please don't waste space and time (they are valuable resources) by posting something like that again.

i like how people who know nothing about billy or the pumpkins call him a primadonna. ur kewl d00d. 3y3 b3t u only list3n 2 down-2-earth kewl d00dz liek urself.

to try to add something constructive in all this stupidity:

anyone else think many more bands have tried to ape nirvana and alice in chains than the pumpkins because most pumpkins songs are a lot harder to pull off? not to take anything away from the other two bands, which i sincerely enjoy and own all CDs by (or used to), etc.

actually on some level the same is true for pearl jam. while many awful rock vocalists (faghat from creed for instance) have tried to mimic eddie vedder's vocals, and of course, failed, their bands usually don't make an attempt at sounding like pearl jam. which may be hindered because their sound has changed somewhat.

not to get pretentious or anything, believe me i realize that rock is a simplistic format and in many cases the songs are technically quite easy. but there's more to making it sound good than just hitting the right notes at the right time, etc, blah blah.

edit: also i realize there are some alice in chains songs that aren't exactly easy, but the gimps aren't trying to mimic jar of flies and whatnot; it's more the crunching dirges that they go after. juxtaposed with a shimmering chorus.

I don't know exactly why you have such a problem with me saying I don't like Adore or Zwan. I think that the Smashing Pumpkins, although not one of the early nineties "grunge" bands, totally blew them away musically. You sound like a pretty big Pumpkins fan yourself. So I don't like the same albums as you. I never said I thought they should just go on remaking Gish and Siamese Dream. I just personally think that they were the most innovative during this period; there are some good songs on other albums besides these. What's your problem?

Besides, I'll waste all the time I want to talking about whatever I want to.

hallo i am a kewl d00d! i get angry about things i read on the intarnet >_< don't make me mad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks chris, i actually hadn't raelly thought about it much before but i think it's probably true. some pumpkins music is very simple on technical terms ('today' is what anti-pumpkins dorks always cite as "proof" that the pumpkins suck and billy can't play guitar, etc.) but not all of it is, and certainly the things that make it recognizably pumpkins are not.

anyway, here's to hoping billy's solo album doesn't suck.
