I saw it on Monday and thought it was great...it has a real nightmarish quality to it. |

definitely one of the better releases of 2001. i enjoyed it.
so what do you think was up with the no faced guy?
2001 wasn't the best year for films (almost as bad as last year), but there were some great offerings in the bizarre catagory.. WAKING LIFE, SPIRITED AWAY, MULHOLLAND DRIVE.. |

The 'no faced' guy? hmmm...I don't know - maybe he was just misunderstood.
Do you have any thoughts about that o'floopster?
So is this an old film? (I'd previously thought it had just been released).
Mulholland Drive is a great film isn't it. |

it was released in 2001 here. did you see it in the theatre?
yeah, the no faced guy was a mystery.. (as was most of the film). on the one hand he seemed to be protecting what's her name.. but then he got all crazy and started eating people and stuff.
i think he was a representation of conscience.. like, all those people got eaten, theoretically, because they were being greedy.. but then i don't know.. he was kind of creepy..
i loved her little bird friend too. |

Yes, i thought that the 'no faced guy' might have represented some kind of moral embodiment - like you say, he only ate the greedy people.
i saw it at the cinema on monday and i've not seen it showing in the uk before now.
i liked it when the girls parents turned into pigs - i thought that was done very nicely. |

I really liked it. I think I need to see it again to fully process it. We've been working our way through the Miyazaki films lately. If you have little ones, they'll love My Neighbor Totoro. Very mellow.

What a strange coincidence... I saw Spirited Away last Monday too and I thought it was amazing, visually. However, maybe I would enjoyed it more had it been slightly shorter... but perhaps I just wasn't in the mood. My favouite character was the witch, I think.

You saw it on Monday too! Well, what are the chances of that eh Edwina?
I think my favourite character was the guy with the spidery arms and legs.

Yeah, I admit the fact we saw the same movie on the same day is an uncanny coincidence... Where were you in the UK?
The guy with spidery arms and legs? He was fine, but to be honest I thought it was a complete rip off from Alice in Wonderland... though in that case it was a worm sitting on top of a mushroom, as far as I remember.

Me, I saw it in London...I've not seen Alice In Wonderland so i couldn't really comment on that aspect of the film.
I think Frank has written a song about you Edwina? (though you meet a fairly sticky end I'm afraid).

I saw it there too... in a North London cinema. Next thing you know, we were in the same cinema!
Shame you haven't seen Alice in Wonderland -it's quite inspirational. In fact, it was one of my favourite stories as a kid, and there are a lot of similarities with Spirited Away. I wonder if the authors are aware of it, and if it was intentional.
Yes, Frank did write a song about me... I'm actually a ghost now. |

Woah, it must be tough being a ghost.
I've read some of Miyazaki's comments about 'Spirited Away' and it seems he wanted to write a film that would appeal to 10 year old girls and that they could draw lessons from. |

It is, it is.
What do you think the lesson that can be drawn from the movie is? |

Lessons that can be drawn?
Being enclosed, protected, and kept away (from dangers), children cannot help but enlarge their fragile egos in their daily lives where they feel their lives as something dim. Chihiro's skinny limbs and sullen face, which indicate she would not be amused so easily, are a symbol of that. Still, when reality becomes clear and she finds herself in a crisis, her adaptability and endurance will well up within her. She would find an existence in which she can bravely decide and act within herself. |

Definitely the best Asian Animation movie I've seen. Mostly because they didn't fuck up the dubbing. Has anyone here seen Grave of the Fireflies? It's supposed to be not only one of the best animated movies, but one of the best movies period. Unfortunately, they got a grown woman to do the dubbing for the little girl and it totally ruins the movie.

My daughter and I watched 'Spirited Away' four times last weekend.
It's one of only two movies that I've bought immediatly after returning the rental to the video store.

Just wondering if you've seen Akira, Ghost in the Shell, or Princess Mononoke? Blood the last Vampire? The first three are absolute classics - (Princess Mononoke is beautiful, but be sure to get the subtitled version!), and the fourth, though a little too short, was extremely well done. If you haven't seen any of these, I highly recommend them. I apologize if this is all old news - Spirited Away is new to me - from what you all are saying, it sounds great. I've been trying to find it, but we have a very limited selection of video rental stores in Columbus.
