Rating four (out of five)

Various music media ran a barely attributed item last week (not so
coincidentally, the day Show Me Your Tears was released) that the Pixies
might be reuniting for an album and tour next spring. As weird as this may
sound, I hope it doesn't happen -- especially after hearing former frontman
Frank Black's latest album.

Show Me Your Tears is a surprisingly UFO-free rootsy album full of
heartbreak and discontent. It's loaded with evocative steel guitar,
sharply-pointed lyrics, and Van Dyke Parks on piano. Gorgeous songs like
"Goodbye Lorraine," "Manitoba" and "When Will Happiness Find Me Again?" get better with each listen.

In the decade since the Pixies broke up, Black has struggled to step out
from the shadow of the seminal alternative combo. It would be a shame if
nostalgia were allowed to eclipse some of the best work of his entire
career.

Who would have thunk it, coming from REGINA, of all places? Usually the Leader-Post just publishes articles slagging off my great city.
