A very positive review by Annie Zaleski, dated Sept 2003. She gives SMYT a Grade A:
Frank Black & The Catholics Show Me Your Tears spinART After revolutionizing modern rock with the thrash and snarl of his late-’80s/early-’90s group the Pixies, Black Francis rechristened himself Frank Black and launched a solo career that so far has had as many crashes and soaring triumphs as the stock market. Show Me Your Tears, his sixth album with backing band the Catholics, falls under the latter category, a heartbroken record drowning its sorrows in vintage country and western twang and bar band standards.
"Jaina Blues" swaggers with honky-tonk piano, "The Snake" features a stomping, dust-rustling saxophone solo and " Manitoba " swings like an Irish drinking song. The sparse "When Will Happiness Find Me Again?" teases out blues licks, while the pedal steel loping through "Goodbye Lorraine " sighs with classic Nashville resignation. Black's poetry contains the sentiments sad-sack drunks write after a bottle of wine, filled with generous doses of self-loathing ("It's a beautiful day / no it's a horrible day / and for the first time in my life I just don't care") and self-pity ("Now I'm wondering / where you are tonight / and I'm singing woe is me"). Nevertheless, as happens with many great works of art, Black's bleakness fuels a collection that's nothing short of rough-edged perfection. Tears is his most satisfactory album in years.

Interesting comment about Manitoba, but a good review all around.

Hmmm... I just don't hear that or it doesn't fit with what I think of an Irish drinking song, but I suppose you'd probably know that better than me. :)

He does! Submit! (And go get yourself a copy of The Pogues' 'If I Should Fall From Grace With God" while yer at it.) ;-)
That would make a lovely duet, w/the ghost of Kirsty MacColl on backup.

Wow. This album is receiving all kinds of fucking praise.
Right on, Frank. The critics are finally catching on to what we've all known as genius for years.

I'd go with "When will Happiness Find me Again" as having more of an Irish drinking song feel to it rather than 'Manitoba'. Why Manitoba?
